Job Description

Responsible to Programme Leader- Production Arts Scope of the JobResponsible to: Programme Leader - Production ArtsResponsible for: Assistant Scenic ConstructionWorks closely with: Production Manager - ProductionArts Department Job Purpose Alongside theProgramme Leader - Production Artsand other colleagues, develop and deliver training and assessment in ScenicBuilding and manage the output of the workshop to a world-leading standard.Duties and ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Programme Leader - ProductionArtsof the Academy, the Scenic Construction Tutor shall execute the following tasksand responsibilities: Leadership and training of students on theproduction arts courses in scenic building and relevanttechnologies.Contributing to the Academys commitmentto thecontinuous raising of standards in the training of students for careers in thearts and entertainment industry and development of new technologies.Maintaining the professional currency of thetraining in scenic building and new technologies through contactwith theindustry, for both staff development and to maintain a professional currency ofthe curriculum.Training and Tuition: Developing the construction syllabus for the BAProduction Arts programme.Teaching all Undergrad and Postgrad theconstruction syllabi.Supervisionand guidance of students fulfilling aconstruction role on Academy productions and projects, working with externalcreatives and the Academy Production Manager.Assessment of students fulfilling a constructionrole on Academy productions and projects.Productions:Close liaison with other departments, inparticular those relating to production.Maintaining and communicating to other departmentsa schedule of the Workshops activities.Other related duties that may arise as a member ofthe Production Arts programme team.Finance:To manage spending and reconciliation of anybudget designated.To research and propose any capital expenditure tokeep in line with current industry developments.Health and Safety: To engage with relevant Health and Safety trainingregarding the teaching anddelivery of construction.To be familiar with, and comply with currentHealth and Safety regulations relevant to the industry.To ensure that personnel and students adhere tosafe working practices.Key Interactions The Scenic Construction Tutor ispart of the TeachingFaculty, directly responsible to the Programme Leader -Production Arts. Knowledge and ExperienceEssential: Relevant undergraduate qualification.A strong background of at least five years ofworking in professional theatre workshop in a producing environment.Conversantwith current and developing scenicconstruction techniques.Strong understanding of CAD programmes.Flexible approach to working and developing thepost.A determined and efficient individual.Desirable: Relevant postgraduate qualification.Budget Management.Experienceof teaching and working at HElevel.Core Competencies Delivery through: Decision making and solving problemsBuilding teams and communicationFacilitating changeDevelopment through: ResilienceDriving resultsManaging StakeholdersContext Sharjah Performing ArtsAcademy(SPAA) is an independent Academy established by His Highness, SheikhDr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, to address a growingdemand in the UAE and MENA region for formal quality education and professionaltraining in the performing artssector. SPAA is the only performing artsconservatoire in the MENA region, offering quality undergraduate and graduatedegree programmes taught in English. The purpose-built Academy comprises of one432 seat theatre, two fully equipped studio performance spaces,TV/recordingstudios, twelve sprung rehearsal studios, 12 singing tutorial spaces, resourcelibrary, gymnasium and cafe. Sharjah Performing Arts Academyspecialises in training graduates for work in the international professionalperforming arts industry. Thefaculty working at SPAA are highly experiencedpractitioners within their respective fields. The focus of the Academy ispractical rather than academic. The central value for a SPAA graduate is armingthem with the highest levels of practical skills for theirfield and givingthem the tools to be able to successfully generate their own work or practice.Complexity Sharjah Performing Arts Academyis a complex performing arts institution. Effective coordination betweendepartments and courses is a high priority to ensurethat resources areappropriately shared and quality in teaching and learning is maintainedthroughout the Academy.
