Respiratory Safety Scientist - 12 Month Fixed Term ContractLocation: Imperial College, LondonExcellent salary & company benefitsAt AstraZeneca every one of our employees makes a difference to patient lives everyday.Exciting opportunity to join a great team as Respiratory Safety Scientist in the Respiratory, Inflammation and Autoimmunity (RIA) Safety department working closely with Early RIA scientists at Imperial College in London.Our ambition is to achieve early intervention, durable remission, disease modification and cure of chronic respiratory disease. Our research aims to understand and address the underlying drivers of disease, and we embrace new tools and technologies making this possible. From a research perspective our emphasis is on four diseases with significant unmet medical need; asthma, COPD, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and Chronic Cough.As part of Clinical Pharmacology & Safety Sciences (CPSS), which contains all non-clinical safety functions that support the entire AstraZeneca Portfolio, RIA Safety is a leading respiratory safety organization that develops and integrates innovative safety science with toxicology excellence to drive the design, selection and successful development of novel treatments for patients with respiratory disease. We are a diverse international department that comprises project toxicologists, discovery safety specialists, respiratory safety experts, pathologists and experimental scientists.To further strengthen our state-of-the-art capabilities to enhance the discovery of safe innovative medicines, we are recruiting world-class scientists. Do you feel passionate about the possibilities of science to change lives Do you have experience working with in/ex vivo models If so, this may be the role for you!ResponsibilitiesWe are currently looking for a highly motivated individual to join RIA Safety. The successful individual will be an important member of the RIA in vivo team at Imperial College, performing studies which will support a diverse range of drug discovery and development projects. This role specifically involves working as a lab-based scientist in the area of in vivo safety pharmacology. It is an in vivo lab based position and is ideally suited to a person with either a BSc/MSc or equivalent animal related qualification, rather than a PhD qualified scientist. As a strongly self-motivated and independent individual you will be adept at working across functional areas, enabling you to maximise value from the available resources. The role will sometimes involve implementing protocols over timelines that extend outside of normal working patterns.Requirements:

  • BSc/MSc or equivalent experience with lab-based in vivo experience and some knowledge of ex vivo techniques for sample analysis.
  • Hands-on in vivo skills and the ability to run disease and mechanistic models, including administering candidate drugs and collecting a range biological samples.
  • Experience of maintaining the highest standards of welfare and ethical compliance as well as ensuring the integrity of the data generated. Familiar with applying the 3Rs across the full range of studies.
  • Able to independently assess and report data with a clear understanding of its reliability, interpret findings and draw appropriate conclusions.
  • A thorough understanding of experimental design and applying the appropriate statistical methods.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and able to proficiently use computers for data acquisition, processing, analysis and presentation.
  • A highly motivated, independent scientist also able to work effectively as part of an international team.
  • Desirable:
  • Experience and understanding of respiratory-specific in vivo techniques and model development for drug discovery projects.
  • Understanding of physiology and immunology in the context of the airways.
  • Recently passed Home Office Modules A, B & C and/or currently hold a Home Office PIL.
  • Fully conversant with all aspects of the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, Directive 2010/63/EU, associated Home Office guidelines and their implications.
  • Ability to perform in vitro plate-based analytical assays e.g. ELISA, MSD
