Job Description

We are looking for two experienced Project Managers with a passion for heritage and special places, to lead priority projects in the Trusts South West region. Working closely with our Senior Building Surveyors and within mixed-discipline project teams, you will be responsible for delivering one, or more, significant conservation projects, and for ensuring that the visitor business at each place continues to flourish while project plans roll out.We are recruiting for two major projects, as top priority. Candidatesare invited to express an interest in one, or both opportunities.Barrington Court Roofs ProjectBarrington Court is set in the South Somerset landscape on the edge of the village of Barrington, near Ilminster. The property is made up of two houses - Court Houseand Strode House. A Grade II listed Tudor manor house completed in the late 1550s, Barrington occupies an unrivalled position in the history of the National Trust. Acquired in 1907 as the very first country house in the Trusts portfolio, it set the precedentfor what was to become the large-scale acquisition of country houses and estates that redefined the National Trusts role forever. Today, Barrington Court welcomes over 120,000 visitors a year, with support from over 200 volunteers. In recent years, the tiledroofs and external fabric of both houses have deteriorated significantly. The primary purpose of this project is to implement comprehensive conservation repairs, to make the buildings safe, secure, and watertight, and ensure public access long into the future. The Project Manager will be required to engage proactively with NT colleagues and appointed contractors, to deliver a stimulating visitor experience programme for the duration of the project and help mitigate disruption to business operations.Barrington Courtforms part of the Trusts South Somerset property portfolio which includes, among other sites, Montacute House, a masterpiece of Elizabethan Renaissance architecture and design with around 170,000 visitors a year; and Stoke Sub Hamdon Priory, a former priestsresidence with amazing 14th/15th-century farm buildings, and about 1500 visitors a year. Important conservation works are in progress at both places. The appointed Project Manager for Barrington Court may also lead, or coordinate aspects of project works atthese sites, as required.Renewable Energy Project - Kingston Lacy and Brownsea IslandWeve set ourselves tough energy reduction targets and are set to derive 50% of our energy use from renewables by 2022, with a target to then reduce our fossil fuel use furtherto a net zero carbon position by 2030.Kingston Lacy is one of the jewels in the National Trusts crown - a remarkable Italian-inspired mansion, set in an 8,500-acre estate in the Dorset countryside. One of the National Trusts Treasure Houses, it has anoutstanding art collection, together with expansive outdoor spaces, including a kitchen garden, pleasure grounds and designed landscape. The Kingston Lacy team have exciting times ahead as they embark on major projects to conserve the property, while welcomingrapidly growing visitor numbers. To deliver this we need a sustainable energy solution. The property was due to install a ground source heat pump when the first lockdown of 2020 hit. The property is currently one of the largest consumers of oil in the NationalTrust, so delivery of this project is essential to meeting the Trusts renewable energy targets.Stunning Brownsea island is located in Poole Harbour, so travelling to work by boat is one of the perks of the job. The island is a haven for wildlife, with anarray of habitats including woodland, heathland, and a lagoon. Our 140,000 visitors each year can escape the busy modern world for the day, or longer by staying on the island at our camp site or holiday cottages. Sustainability is at the heart of our visionfor the island and delivering the right renewable energy solution for our visitor business is essential to us being able to achieve this.Youll be working as part of a national programme and the sharing of experiences and learnings between project managersacross regions is expected and encouraged to ensure consistency and the continuous improvement of the way projects are delivered. Youll need to have a good, high level, understanding of the operation of at least one of the renewable energy technologies weare looking to deploy, and be able to challenge contractors and consultants on their designs to ensure a high quality system is delivered. What its like to work hereThe National Trust Consultancy is a multidisciplinary team of experts - a flexible and deployableresource of specialist skills and experience in every field of our work. Most Consultants are based within regional teams, but some are part of national directorates or programmes. Together we form one integrated national Consultancy. Our purpose is to deliverthe Trusts Strategy by providing a great service to properties and collaborating across boundaries to make things happen. Both Project Manager roles will join the South West regional Consultancy team, although the renewables energy role will align to our nationalrenewables programme. Both roles will be based out of our Tisbury Consultancy hub in Wiltshire. You will be required to work flexibly and should expect to spend a proportion of your working week on site and a proportion working remotely from home, with occasionaltime in regional offices, as project needs demand. What youll be doingSupported by your Consultancy Manager and the General Managers of the properties and working within the National Trusts Project Management Framework, youll lead on and deliver individualproperty projects across the region. Youll cover all stages of the project lifecycle from feasibility to handover. The roles will include leading engagement with stakeholders and key funding partners as we develop the right solutions for our properties. Througheffective time management, you will make sure that the work delivers at pace and within funding deadlines. Your responsibility will run through until the project is handed back to the property and running smoothly as part of business as usual. You will alsobe expected to play an active part in the Trusts wider project management community - a network of sharing of best practice and mentoring, as well as technical support and development, ensuring that our projects are delivering benefits in line with our nationalstrategy.Who were looking for Project management experience in one of the following areas: renewable energy (ideally biomass or heat pumps), mechanical and electrical or services engineering (with experience relating to heating systems), construction, buildingsurveying or architecture.
