Job Description

About the Service / DepartmentThe Kensington, Chelsea & Westminster (KCW) Cove is a community-based crisis alternative service, provided by Hestia on behalf of Central and Northwest London NHS Foundation Trust, offering non-clinical support to individuals experiencing a crisis or mentaldistress. We provide a welcoming, safe and supportive space for individuals aged 16+ who reside in KCW and/or are registered with a GP in the borough.About the role:

  • To draw upon lived experience of mental health support needs and recovery to empathetically assist service users to move forward positively from crisis, where appropriate.
  • Provide inspiration to individuals going through mental distress.
  • Respond to the needs of individuals with sensitivity with regard to their age, culture, race, gender, ethnicity, social class or disability, modifying behaviour to optimise the helping relationship.
  • Support people with crisis Mental Health needs to manage their own health care, in accordance with their care plan with a view to preventing further crisis.
  • Signpost customers to local community resources to address cultural/social barriers affecting their wellbeing.
  • Link customers with specialist services for continuous support e.g. counselling, money management, substance misuse.
  • Promote the rights of individuals by recognising differences and acting in accordance with the relevant legislation, recognising and reporting discriminatory behaviour, and taking appropriate action.
  • Promote and maintain effective communication with people in order to build positive working relationships with individuals, other team members, clinical colleagues, families and carers and other agencies.
About you:
  • Knowledge of issues affecting those individuals with a range of mental health conditions including crisis management, how to communicate effectively with these individuals and how to support them with dignity and respect.
  • Knowledge of relevant Mental Health legislation i.e. Care Program Approach (CPA) processes.
  • Understanding of the principles of recovery as an ethos and a range of recovery approaches.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, on own initiative and to oversee induction of new peer staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to work with statutory services i.e. NHS at the front line
  • Awareness of health and safety issues.
  • Ability to work Monday to Sunday 14:00 -22:00pm including working bank holidays.
  • Good IT skills that including a working knowledge of functions in MS Word, Outlook and the internet.
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills, able to produce clear written correspondence in hard copy or email.
  • Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding issues and ability to address them appropriately.
