Job Description

Job IntroductionMain Responsibilities The Payroll & Employee Tax Officer supports all payroll activities for the Bank across the UK and liaises with the District HR, Functional HR and HR Support teams. They are the Employee Tax expert in the team providing support to the Payroll Manager on alltax related matters, including expat tax, and liaising with HMRC and other stakeholders.

  • Act as the subject matter expert in the Payroll team on all employee/expatriate tax related matters, working with the Banks Employee Tax Expert to ensure knowledge sharing and upskilling of the wider Payroll team with regard to employee tax considerations.
  • Responsible for reconciling all employee tax payments due and working closely with the Employee Tax expert in Finance to ensure the correct treatment has been applied.
  • Support the Payroll Manager in filing all tax returns including P111Ds, PSA, Form 42 and all other HMRC filings and payments due, ensuring these are accurate and reported/filed/paid on time.
  • Liasing with the Banks external tax advisers regarding tax advice and returns for all expatriats, ensuring that the expatriates receive a clear timeline of reporting and payments due.
  • Assists in payroll activities such as reconciling, inputting, compiling payroll statistics, maintaining payroll control records and calculating payrolls.
  • Assists with queries arising from internal and external stakeholders and investigates any relevant issues and responds to employee queries.
  • Partners with Benefits Team in order to ensure benefits are set up and processed correctly via payroll.
  • Assist with setting up and maintaining Management Information reports and split costing and recharges on a monthly basis.
  • Operate in line with the Banks Risk Management framework (including sub-frameworks) and relevant risk and compliance policies and procedures, ensuring appropriate and timely escalation of any concerns to their line manager.

  • Extensive experience of UK payroll
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CIPP) (either full or part qualified) - desirable
  • Strong working knowledge of employment tax
  • Good working knowledge of Expatriates (preferably) experience of modified payroll arrangements
  • Communication
    • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence from HMRC and internal emails/memos.
    • Ability to draft complex correspondence.
    • Ability to effectively present information in one-to -one and in small group situations to colleagues and employees.
    • Ability to support colleagues and employees understanding of complex issues.
  • Reasoning Ability
    • Ability to apply common sense and a thorough understanding of HMRC and other statutory regulations/laws as they apply to payroll processing.
    • Ability to calculate discounts, interest, commissions, proportions and percentages
    • Ability to perform and explain gross-up calculations
    • Ability to interpret and carry out complicated written and oral instructions.
    • Ability to deal with complex problems by negotiating and liaising with colleagues across the Bank (including wider HR Teams)
  • Computer Skills
    • Advanced level ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, email, accounting and Employee Information System software with a strong emphasis on spreadsheets
    • Experience of working with iTrent is preferable
