Job Description

This is a full time Consultant Psychiatrist post in General Adult Psychiatry covering maternity leave for 6 months based at Redbridge Community Recovery Team East, Mellmead House, 4 Orchard Close, Rodney Road, Wanstead E11 2DH. The employing organization is North East London NHS Foundation Trust. The Associate Medical Director for the Service is Dr Shweta Anand.The post provides sound clinical experience including in areas such as cross cultural psychiatry, management of community treatment orders, attendance at mental health review tribunals and mental health act assessments under supervision. Assertive outreach has been included within the CRT caseload and providing experience in the assessment and management of complex cases. There are excellent opportunities to participate in research, audit and a range of special interest sessions/innovative projects within the Trust. Leadership and management learning opportunities including shadowing opportunities are available. Engagement opportunities with GPs are available.There is access to local academics, trust wide academics, a variety of free courses within the Trust and also to the monthly Bart’s academic programme. Experience in ECT and psychological treatments including mindfulness and dialectical behaviour therapy can be obtained. As a number of general adult mental health services are co located in Mellmead House, the postholder will work alongside several other trainees including GP trainees, middle grades and consultants in an active learning atmosphere.The post holder will have access to an office space at Mellmead House with access to a computer. He/she will work closely with the consultant psychiatrist, the multidisciplinary team, the staff grade psychiatrists and the Junior trainee in the team. There is dedicated secretarial support through two medical secretaries in the team. Wanstead high street is close by and offers a wide variety of cafes, shops and good public transport links. Car parking is available in and around Mellmead House. Library facilities are available at Goodmayes Hospital.Community Recovery Teams There are two teams CRT West and East. The post holder will be based in CRT East. The East team caseload is 350 about 40 are non CPA patients. Dr Dunne’s caseload is 170. It includes about 20 non CPA patients. Dr Anand (this post) has an approximate caseload of 170 patients which includes 20 non-CPA patients approximately. In terms of medical resources, there are 1.0 staff grade psychiatrists, 1 higher trainee and a CT/FY2/GP trainee in CRT East in addition to the two consultant psychiatrists. A rigorous multidisciplinary risk zoning process is in place.We work closely with following teams:

  • Early Intervention in Psychosis teams
  • Inpatient Services
  • Psychiatric liaison service to Queens Hospital A&E (Romford), King George Hospital A&E (Ilford) and Whipps Cross Hospital A&E (Leytonstone)
  • Trust-wide Eating Disorder service
  • Trust wide Perinatal Service
  • Personality Disorder Service (IMPART)
  • Forensic Input:
  • NELFT also has an agreement with East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) who are commissioned to provide for forensic services within Redbridge, which NELFT works in partnership with and has access to The John Howard Centre part of the ELFT provision for Medium Secure beds. There is a monthly Forensic meeting which is attended by Dr Anand (AMD) and Dr Shah (Forensic consultant). This offers learning experience and opportunity to discuss complex high risk cases.Psychiatric services in the community for older adults in Redbridge are provided by the following teams:
  • Older Adult Community Mental Health Team
  • Redbridge Memory Service
  • Older Adult Home Treatment Team
  • Outpatient and community liaison services
  • Inpatient Services with an ECT department, which provides electro convulsive therapy 2 days a week (Mondays and Thursdays). The department is run by a dedicated Lead Consultant (Dr S Khawaja), a Lead Nurse (Jackie Cunniffe) and also has supervision from a Modern Matron (Lorna Mess).
  • General Hospital Liaison
  • The Trust also provides Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (Community and Inpatient).The Redbridge Community Recovery Service looks after patients who are on CPA and also non-CPA patients with Severe and Enduring Mental Health Disorder. The objective of the Service is to provide comprehensive evidence based multi disciplinary care through health and social care interventions reducing hospital admissions and promoting recovery, well being, social inclusion and social functioning. The Service seeks to assertively and proactively engage with patients and carers and is locally led through strong collaboration and partnership working between the clinical (consultants) and operational leads (team managers). All service users have individual care plans focusing on their psychiatric, physical, social and occupational needs. The Service is in constant liaison with other local services such as access and assessment teams, home treatment teams, perinatal service, psychiatric liaison, psychology, and GPs and also other relevant agencies such as the local council. There have been recent initiatives aimed at improving engagement with GPs and public health colleagues with a view to strengthening interfaces. The Service has two multidisciplinary mental health teams namely Community Recovery Team East (CRTE) and Community Recovery Team West (CRTW) covering the East and West sectors respectively in Redbridge. The Community Recovery Team East has a caseload of approximately 350 patients. About 300 of these patients are on CPA and 40 are non-CPA patients.
