Job Description

The IT Systems Infrastructure Team Lead will play a major role in defining and leading the technology direction for core IT Infrastructure Technologies, as well as providing specialist expertise for IT Infrastructure design and implementation projects. Thisrole will be leading a team of 5.Client DetailsA cosmopolitan university with over 15,000, from over 130 countries with a global alumni network of over 80,000. The University is located on a single campus in central London; in historic, vibrant and unique Elephant and Castle.Description

  • To manage, lead, motivate and develop the Systems Infrastructure team in accordance with the policies and procedures.
  • To supervise and participate in the delivery of a helpful, responsive and courteous service to all staff and stakeholders by the Systems Infrastructure team and to work in co-operation with all sections of IT in delivering excellent customer service.
  • To supervise the IT Systems Infrastructure team ensuring that incidents and service requests related to Systems Infrastructure Engineering are appropriately logged with relevant, clear and accurate diagnostic information and resolved/completed in accordancewith agreed service targets.
  • To ensure that all IT changes related to the scope of the role are logged, approved and implemented in accordance with the IT Change Management policy and process.
  • To contribute to the delivery of Systems Infrastructure services in accordance to industry best practice (e.g. ITIL) and search for continual service improvement of all delivered services.
  • In collaboration with the Head of IT Application & Infrastructure Support and as a result of business engagement, develop plans for building solutions and environments that address the Universitys business and technical strategies that are conducive toquick and inexpensive systems delivery.
  • To manage suppliers to meet key performance indicators and agreed targets and use suppliers expertise to support and inform development roadmaps.
  • Responsible for capacity planning, system monitoring, performing security improvement tasks related to IT Infrastructure systems and producing reports on required KPIs.
  • To ensure that system/data backups are undertaken in accordance with the IT backup policy and procedures, and test restores are undertaken on a regular basis.
  • To plan and schedule regular proactive and preventative maintenance tasks, including; patches, updates and upgrades to operating systems, virus protection, firmware components, etc. in line with manufacturers recommendations whilst minimising disruptionto users.
  • Responsible for Infrastructure installation projects, providing effective team leadership, developing quality implementation plans and continual service improvement.
  • To plan and organise the on-call rota and early and late shifts.
  • To produce and maintain IT Infrastructure technical documentation, processes and procedures and Knowledge Management articles.
  • To maintain an awareness of current developments within IT and its application to Learning and Teaching within a Higher Education context through attending training sessions, conferences and reading appropriate published materials.
  • To resolve service escalations and complaints in a timely manner.
  • To deputise for the Head of Application & Infrastructure Support as and when required.
  • Attend and actively participate in Technical Design Authority (TDA) meetings.
  • To perform other duties that may reasonably be required from time to time commensurate with the grade of this role.
  • To ensure that staff maintain a safe environment whilst carrying out their duties and are compliant with all health and safety procedures.
Profile
  • Educated to degree level or relevant technical certification.
  • ITIL V2/V3 Foundation Certificate essential, ITIL Intermediate Certification preferred.
  • In-depth experience in the day-to-day management and leadership of a diverse team of service support staff, including staff performance management and development, and motivation of staff to deliver professional, high quality, and customer focused services.
  • Excellent organisational and delegation skills with ability to use own initiative and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Knowledge and experience of supporting both private/public cloud based and local IT Infrastructure systems, including servers (physical and virtual), core applications, VMware, system management-monitoring-alerting tools, scripting languages, Microsoft365,SANs/Hyper Converged Infrastructure, public cloud (Microsoft Azure and AWS) and common network protocols across a diverse and complicated organisation.
  • Good decision-making skills, considering the needs of the situation, priorities, constraints and the availability of necessary information.
  • Knowledge of data centre technologies, concepts, tools and practices, and industry standards and trends.
  • Experience in managing both local and private/public cloud based, large-scale, complex systems and new/changed IT Infrastructure services.
  • Knowledge of server operating systems (e.g. MS-Windows and LINUX) and related system management tools.
  • In-depth experience of using Service Management tools to manage and resolve incidents and problems and implement service requests and changes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to communicate with a diverse range of both internal and external stakeholders both verbally and in writing.
  • A thorough understanding of the role and purpose of IT within HE.
  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of health & safety in the workplace.
  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of, and commitment to, equality and diversity, and its practical application.
