Job Description

Ion Source Mechanical Technician Salary: £31,212 to £42,840 per annum (dependent on skills and experience). Hours: Full time Contract Type: Open Ended. Location: Science and Technology Facilities Council, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Harwell, OxfordshireTogether, our scientist, technologists, engineers and business support team explore the unknown and turn what they find into work that changes the world around us. The ISIS neutron and muon source is a world leading research centre at UKRI-STFC’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. At the heart of ISIS is a high power particle accelerator. The Low Energy Beams Group,(LEBG) is responsible for creating the initial particle beam and delivering it to the ISIS accelerator. The group also runs several test stands for accelerator research and development. The Ion Source Section of the group is responsible for refurbishing, operatingand developing high current negative ion sources for ISIS and other accelerator projects. The group currently operates two types of world leading negative ion source technologies: a Penning and a new inductively coupled plasma source. The ion sources consistof precision assemblies of electrodes and insulators that produce plasmas in vacuum chambers at high powers and make beams with high voltages. You will be responsible for the assembly and operation of the ion sources, supported by a team of Technicians, Engineers,Physicists. You will also manage the stocks of components and keep the ion source laboratory in good order. Participation in the ISIS on-call system is required. As part of the team, you will provide assistance with all aspects of work being undertaken, aswell as playing a vital role in carrying out crucial support and maintenance activities to ensure that the facility remains operational. This is a practical job, whilst remote working will occasionally be possible for computer work this job will primarilybe lab based. Duties will include: Testing and operation of ion sources. Fault-finding and the maintenance of ion sources supported by other LEBG members. Autopsying ion sources. Assisting with the design and development of ion sources. Testing and installationof new equipment and systems. Procuring materials, components and spares. Working with drawings and technical documentation. Working with standard office software packages. Supervising external contract and maintenance staff. Working in a safe, tidy and responsiblemanner, according to STFC safety, health and environmental requirements. Organising a small workshop/laboratory Acquiring and applying new skills. Cleaning and assembly of ion sources. In addition, ‘Band D’ duties would also include: Project manage new installationsand upgrades to systems. Lead fault-finding and the maintenance of LEBG equipment. Creating, updating, and amending LEBG documentation. Liaising with contract staff and suppliers. Producing test schedules and overseeing the testing of new equipment. ShortlistingCriteria Level 3 qualification, (ONC), or above in an appropriate technical subject area, or equivalent experience. (S) Technical assembly skills. (S&I) Good communication and team working skills, able to collaborate closely with employees at all levels. (S&I)Experience of working with processes and systems. (S&I) Experience working in a laboratory environment. (S&I) Experience of vacuum and/or gas systems. (S&I) Experience of engineering drawings.
