The British Paediatric Surveillance Unit is a world leading centre for rare paediatric disease surveillance. It enables doctors and researchers to investigate how many children in the UK and Republic of Ireland are affected by particular rare diseases, conditions or treatments each year.As post holder, you will be responsible for managing and leading the development of the unit in collaboration with the main stakeholders - the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health where the role is based and by whom you are employed, Public Health England and University College London.This is a scientific post requiring expert knowledge in rare disease epidemiology, surveillance and extensive experience in research management at a senior level. The role heads a team which works with the BPSU governance board and scientific committee to develop and implement the strategic aims of the BPSU and to maximise the units potential.The role requires expert knowledge to contribute scientifically to the rare disease arena, and from a improved public health information to support rare disease policy development. You will have experience of reviewing scientific applications, writing scientific reports and papers for publication and present findings at national and international conferences. The role also requires attendance at government and non-governmental meetings, development and work committees.The role requires a good knowledge of research methods in order to review project applications also a high level of research governance knowledge in order to support submission.The role also has a public facing function in that it communicates and disseminates information to the patient groups and the public.Three key areas of activity1) Leading the high profile and internationally recognised British Paediatric Surveillance Unit by working closely and in collaboration with the Partnership Board, the Scientific Committee and study leads to initiate, coordinate and continually develop a suite of innovative surveillance projects into rare diseases and conditions which affect infants, children and young people.2) Managing the day to day running of the Unit, to ensure good financial management, working closely with the Chair of the BPSU Scientific Committee to develop a long term (five year) strategy and annual operational plan, maintaining the financial stability of the Unit and contributing to fundraising activity and supporting lay and patient representatives.3) Contributing to the Research and Quality Improvement Divisional Management Team and working with other colleagues to identify appropriate outlets to disseminate the Units work and study findings to influence policy and practice and input into education resources for clinicians and those working in the field of rare disease.
