Job Description

Job title: Environment ManagerLocation: RemoteSalary: £40,000 DOEJob Purpose:The Environment Manager role will bring structure, organisation, and expertise to optimise and align production and non-production environments with modern enterprise IT standards. The role will ensure the stability, efficiency, and reliability of the businessesstrategic environments to support continual improvements and help drive long-term growth. Working as part of close-knit but geographically dispersed team; communication, technical knowledge, analytical problem solving and ability to deliver large scale changesacross an IT organisation will be important to the success of this role.Key Responsibilities:Environment Strategy:

  • Develop a robust, data driven, practical, cost-effective environment strategy across both production and non-production environments.
  • Ensure the environment architecture and organisation matches the business needs (environments for adequate and valuable QA, Automation, Non-Functional etc)
  • Use forward planning techniques for right-sizing, scheduling, and load balancing in response to project demands.
  • Coordinate and manage competing resource requests across the production and non-production environments.
  • Conduct capacity planning for production environments to ensure they are fit to handle anticipated workload peaks and further growth.
  • Forecast resource requirements based on usage patterns and upcoming projects.
  • Support and improve disaster recovery plans for all environments to minimise downtime in the event of failures or disasters.
  • Work with system owners and infrastructure teams to ensure automated system alerts are configured to the optimum thresholds.
  • Develop and manage a calendar to ensure activities are optimally timed and scheduled, reducing risks and contributing to the overall success of environmental initiatives.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:Educational Background:
  • Degree in a relevant field, or significant professional experience in a related field.
  • Preferable: Additional certifications in relevant areas such as ITIL, Environment Management, Project Management, or specific technology platforms.
Skills and Experience:
  • Experience in managing production and non-production environments and successful deployment of releases in complex environments.
  • Strong knowledge of configuration and release management processes and tools.
  • Experience with continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.
  • Proficiency in system and environment administration, with an understanding of database management, and some scripting.
  • In-depth understanding of operating systems (e.g., Linux, Windows) and virtualisation technologies.
  • Familiarity with on-prem (e.g. Datacentres) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, OCI) and containerisation (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Experience of Online Transactional Processing (OLTP) systems processing large volumes of database transactions in a high availability environment.
  • Experience with a wide range of IT system and able to understand and identify the optimum environmental considerations for each depending on use, development languages (e.g. .NET PHP, JAVA, T-SQL), underlying infrastructure etc
  • Familiarity with implementing and using reporting tools like POWER BI, Data Studio, Tableau, etc.
  • Sound understanding of development and project lifecycles across all SDLC methodologies and IT governance processes (Agile, ITIL, etc)
