Job Description

Team Overview Were spending more of our time online - to work, learn, entertain ourselves and keep in touch with others.However, being online has its risks, with Ofcom research finding that nearly two in three people have come across harmful content online recently.This is why the Government has appointed Ofcom as the regulator for online safety in the UK.Our role in upholding broadcasting standards for TV and radio programmes means weve gained extensive experience of protecting audiences from harm while upholding freedom of expression. An important part of our job will be to make sure online platforms dothe same with their systems and processes.Join us and make a meaningful contribution to online safety whilst contributing to a vibrant, fast paced, innovative UK digital economy!Purpose of the Role Ofcom is looking for an energetic and creative social media expert and digital storyteller to help explain how our work affects people up and down the country.We look after the UKs communications - from phone and broadband, TV and radio to wireless airwaves and the postal service. Ofcom is also taking on new duties to make online services safer, by making sure companies tackle harmful content.High-quality, reliable communications services have never mattered more to peoples lives. We help make sure companies provide them. The industries Ofcom regulates are changing fast, making this an exciting time to join our team.Ofcoms work includes upholding standards on TV and radio; helping the UK to be a world leader in 5G mobile and ultrafast broadband; managing the UK airwaves; and overseeing Royal Mail. To support that work, we carry out world-class research, including trackingthe latest trends in how people use and think about media.We are seeking an enthusiastic, experienced digital communicator with a passion for social media, a keen interest in online developments and a strong interest in the wider news landscape.Working closely with colleagues in the Communications team, who cover both social and traditional media relations, you will apply your judgement and initiative to find lively, engaging ways to explain our work and offer help or advice to people and businesses.In joining a friendly, collaborative team, youll see why Ofcom was recently named by PR Week as the UKs best place to work in in-house comms.What you are expected to deliver

  • Strong track record of delivering social media strategies and activities, ideally within a complex environment with multiple agendas and stakeholders.
  • Day-to-day management of Ofcoms social media channels - developing and posting proactive content, identifying opportunities and escalating potential crises.
  • History of engaging and building online audiences and communities.
  • Experience of analysing social media activity and growing audiences - either in-house for a high-profile organisation, or within an agency on behalf of significant clients.
  • Ability to work across an organisation, acting as a passionate ambassador for digital communications up to senior level.
Essential Skills and Knowledge
  • Thorough understanding of social media platforms, channels, audiences and opportunities.
  • Expertise and imagination to identify how complex policy can be translated into simple, striking digital messages or short stories - using any combination of text, images, infographics, sound or video.
  • A genuine passion for digital communications, and the ability to transmit that enthusiasm to colleagues at all levels across a diverse organisation.
  • Commissioning and developing creative assets for use on Ofcoms social media channels
  • Planning and delivering paid social media activity
  • Good plain-English writing skills, grammar and attention to detail.
  • Quick learner, flexible and enthusiastic about working across a range of communications issues.
  • Ability to work on a number of projects at once.
