We are always mindful that we need to deliver positive outcomes for all, according to our motto: Learning to Live Life to the Full. We aim to develop and nurture happy and fulfilled students whilst ensuring that they have the highest possible levels of independence before they move on to post-16/post-19 education and later adult life. We provide 140 student places in years 7-14 across 5 teams for students with a wide range of general, moderate, complex, severe and profound and multiple learning difficulties. Approximately 68% of the schools population have a diagnosis of autism.The teamsEach team consists of 3/4 classes, organised according to common levels of independence and needs, divided by key stage rather than year group.Team 1: MLD (11-16, KS3/4) Progress 8+, formal curriculumTeam 2: SLD (11-16, KS3/4) Progress 8+/8, adapted curriculumTeam 3: SLD (11-16, KS3/4) Sensory Progress 8Team 4: PMLD (11-19, KS3/4/5) Developmental 8Team 5: MLD/SLD (16-19, KS5) Specialised multi-dimensional curriculumClassteachersClassteachers at Riverside teach either/or:4 subjects within Progress 8/8+ and Sensory Progress 8 (English/Maths/Science/PSHEE)4 learning areas within Developmental 8 (Communication/Cognition/ Independence & Self-care / Physical Development)(The remaining 4 subjects/areas are taught by specialists (Music/Art/PE/Food Technology)4 learning areas within a Towards Independence model (Independent Skills/Transition to Adulthood/In the Community/keeping Healthy)The postsWe are looking for two creative and enthusiastic classteachers to join a very supportive staff group, committed to team work. We are looking for a teacher with some experience of teaching SEND students (preferably in a special school because the classes concerned have very complex needs - but this is not essential so long as candidates are keen to teach at these early learning levels).Both classes will consist of students working at lower Team 3 Levels, i.e. P-Steps 5/6 in the Sensory Progress 8 model, nearly all with a diagnosis of autism. General knowledge of autism and some experience of teaching or working with students with complex needs and how these needs impact on their learning. Resourcefulness, flexibility and a creative approach to the successful drawing up and delivery of the curriculum to students experiencing very significant difficulties with their learning. Ability to sign at a basic level, (or willingness to learn),and some knowledge of communication aids such as PECS/PODD. Knowledge and experience of successfully managing challenging behaviour. The ability to work effectively as a member of a team. The confidence and ability to lead a small team of assistants within the class effectively. Sound planning, assessment and record-keeping skills. The skills to communicate effectively with parents and a range of professionals. Sound knowledge and understanding of equalities issues, and their relevance to school life.
