Job Description

Summary This is a fixed term contract due to end when the previous employee returns from maternity leave. At this point we cannot confirm exactly how long this contract will last, but it is unlikely to be more than 12 months. Working under the ethos of For Everyone, For Ever our conservation work is a vital part of who we are. We look after some of the biggest, most significant, and oldest collections in Europe, and these need specialist conservators to continue to keep themfor everyone to enjoy.Preventive Conservation is a key part of the Trusts work of looking after and presenting historic collections. This role provides essential central support for the delivery of preventive conservation at National Trust properties across the whole organisation. Please note that the salary is inclusive of an additional London weighting of £4,465 which will apply if your contractual base is Grosvenor Gardens, London. What its like to work here As the Assistant National Conservator - Preventive, youll be partof the National Conservators team, supporting the Senior National ConservatorConservation Science in the Trusts conservation work for care of collections and working with other Senior National Conservators. This post is contractually based at our Grosvenor Gardens office in London but is currently working remotely. There will be an opportunity to explore and agree remote working arrangements which strike the right balance for you and the Trust. As a guide,presence in the office is expected two days per week during the initial training and induction phase, potentially reducing to one day per week as you settle into the role. What youll be doing As the Assistant National Conservator - Preventive youll be working to support and maintain the National Trusts high standards of preventive conservation across properties in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Youll learn and apply the technical specialisms needed to provide environmental monitoring and control support to our properties, especially house-based teams. Youll assist in provision of preventive conservation advice to properties and technical supportfor environmental monitoring systems, central data collation including analysis and reporting of temperature, relative humidity, light and insect pest data. Youll assist in the development of in-house training materials and help deliver training to operationaland conservation staff.Much of this work is delivered remotely using video conferencing platforms and remote support tools, but there will also be the need to visit properties for on-site working from time to time and to attend meetings and events at other National Trust offices. Who were looking for Youll have training and experience in preventive conservation for collections care, an understanding of the National Trusts goals and ethos and how vital this role is to the conservation of the Trusts houses and collections. To be considered for this role youll need to demonstrate in your application:

  • Passion for preventive conservation and enthusiasm for developing best practice at the Trust
  • Evidence of relevant scientific understanding of chemistry or physics, or completed courses of scientific conservation
  • Excellent IT skills, particularly in the use of environmental monitoring software systems, data analysis and presentation using spreadsheets and other software and video conferencing software such as Webex
  • Excellent writing skills, including experience of writing reports and technically detailed emails
  • Presentation skills, with the ability to understand the audience and tailor your presentation accordingly
  • Communication and team working skills, the ability to understand and work with different groups and individuals across the organisation
  • The ability to work remotely
