Job Description

The International British School of Bucharest is currently seeking to appoint a Deputy Head of Secondary, to start August 16, 2022. This is a new position being offered in 2022, linked directly to school expansion and the strategic objectives of the school, with the potential for further career development. Why come to teach in RomaniaRomania is without a doubt one of the nicest countries in Europe to work in. You have 4 seasons, beautiful beaches to enjoy in the summer, the last remaining mountain wildernessin Europe, a wide range of ski fields located just 90 mins from school in the winter, and many more sunny days than rain. You can also save a considerable portion of your monthly salary. Romanians are also a very warm and friendly people, well educated, withmost speaking 3 or more languages. The students are generally above the UK average in ability and well-behaved, so teaching in Romania is a pleasure, with plenty of support from both the school and the parents - we are fortunate to have one of the most supportiveParent Associations I have experienced to date, who for example organised a surprise morning tea for all the staff at the end of Term 1a last year to thank us for a successful first half term. What is life like in BucharestBucharest, the capital city, is cleanand safe with a good public metro and tram system. You can walk around at night on your own safely and there is lots to do on the weekends. You have malls located throughout the city with all the western brand shops and restaurants you would expect, but atprices far below western Europe, so you money goes much further. Teachers are paid 3-4 times the average salary, so it is easy to save and eating out is cheap, costing around 15 euros for an entree, main, dessert, and drink, which is why many of our internationalstaff eat out 3 or more times a week. It is also a place where you can buy your own apartment within one year of arriving, saving on rent, as many staff have done.Teach in one of the top British International Schools in EuropeOpening in 2000, IBSB quicklyestablished a reputation as a school with high academic standards, as the first COBIS accredited school in Romania, the first ECIS accredited school, the first CIS school, the first international school to be accredited by the Romania Ministry of Education, and more recently the first and only High Performance Learning School in Romania. Deeply committed to supporting student wellbeing and extracurricular enrichment, IBSB is considered to be one of the top international schools in Romania. The school was judgedGood-Outstanding in the most recent Quality of Education ISI/BSO inspection. We have also just started on the HPL journey to World Class Schools membership, with the school campus doubling in size over the past 2 years. In every way, it is an exciting time, with plenty to look forward to in the next few years in the school development plan.Student ProfileThere are currently 230 students registered in the Secondary School, with a 65% Romanian, 35% international mix. Class sizes are small, with a maximum of 22students per class in a KS3 & 4 and smaller class sizes in the IGCSE optional subjects and Key Stage 5 classes, allowing for a high degree of teacher-student contact time and personal support, with many successful programmes set up to support and extend studentsat both ends of the spectrum. Student baseline assessment is well above the national average in the UK, resulting in 100% of graduate students continuing on to university in 2021, including 95% of graduates receiving offers from a university ranked in thetop 5% of universities worldwide. As this data indicates, behaviour is generally excellent with little more for teachers to deal with than minor low level disruption.StaffingThe staffing mix at IBSB is approximate 50% international, 50% local. Staff turnoveris typically very low, with many staff having brought apartments and houses, owing to the comfortable lifestyle offered in Romania. The staff environment within school is welcoming and supportive, with regular staff socials and weekends trips away from schoolto explore the beautiful old Germanic-styled towns scattered across the Carpathian Mountains (Google search Brasov, Sibiu, and Sighisoara to start with), skiing in the winter, visiting the Black Sea coastline in the summer, or taking the opportunity to useone of the many the low cost airlines passing through Bucharest to visit Greece, Italy, Turkey, and many other countries a short flight way.Applicant ProfileThe successful candidate will be an outstanding teacher with considerable middle leadership experience, possibly someone already working as a Deputy Head of Secondary in another high performing British School looking for a new challenge or new opportunity to develop as a senior leader within an experienced senior leadership team; someone with excellent communicationskills, a good listener who works well within a team, able to identify and develop leadership potential in others; a reflective classroom practitioner, naturally aligned to the school Mission Inspire, Support, Celebrate, and Vision as a lifelong learner, embodying the 30 High Performance Learning competencies; a person who places students at the centre of teaching pedagogy, with a deep concern for the wellbeing of others; a trusted and supportive colleague; and a person with integrity, committed to the notionof serving others and the wider school community.Package includes: A competitive after tax salary Return Airfare ticket (per 2 year contract) Relocation allowance Private Medical Insurance Housing allowance and assistance Placement for dependants up to 2 (determinedby availability of space)Specific Requirements: Positive outlook on life Good communication skills Outstanding classroom practitioner Middle leadership experience Experience as Pastoral Care Head or Lead Knowledge of the National Curriculum of England Evidenceleading staff CPD Performance Review Experience Experience Mentoring/Coaching Staff English Proficiency EU passport holder preferred, but not essential Degree and recognised teaching qualification 3 positive references from pervious schools covering at leastthe last 5 years of teachingFor a more detailed breakdown of the job prerequisites and requirement, please refer to the job description attached.Additional requirements sort, but not essential: Previous experience teaching in international schools Experienceadministering standardised baseline assessment Experience organising and administering external exams Timetabling Experience Experience as a Deputy Head of SecondaryTerms and Conditions of the appointment:An initial 2-year renewable contract offers a competitivecompensation and benefits package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position. All applications to be forwarded to recruitment@ibsb.ro.IBSB is fully committed to safeguarding its children and young people and expects the same level of
