Art Director, Nature Reviews (6 months)LondonClosing date: July 18th 2021Nature Reviews are a group of journals dedicated to filtering, highlighting and reviewing the latest information from a broad range of scientific and clinical areas. We are lookingfor a forward-thinking Art Director to lead the artistic direction of these journals in both print and digital platforms. The Art Director will manage a talented group of art editors, who together create graphics and figures for this portfolio of Review journals.This is for a period of 6 months, covering maternity leave, extensions possible. We welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds.The role requires strategic planning and artistic vision as well as day-to-day oversight of journal artwork.Key tasks include: AssistsCreative Director in execution of artistic vision of Nature Reviews on all platforms (print, digital, social, email). Undertakes full line management responsibility for a number of in-house art team members, directing, delegating and supervising the team asrequired. Collaborates with editorial team to conceive of visual content for Nature Reviews, along with ideas for the presentation of that content on all platforms. Conceptualises, assigns and art directs illustration, photography, information graphics andanimation. Oversees quality of visual content for Nature Reviews. Manages the daily operations and workflow of the art team and on special projects as assigned, and line manages members of the team as assigned. Assigns artwork to art department staff and freelancersas needed. Organises and runs art team meetings. Sources and directs freelance staff, ensuring they comply with the same standards as internal staff. Creates graphics for print and digital using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator as core tools, and additionaltools such as 3D rendering software and animation (After Effects), as appropriate. Stays abreast of design trends and products within the industry.Qualifications: Art or design degree is preferred.Skills/knowledge: Strong technical skills including Mac experienceof using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. Animation and coding experience useful. Strong typographic expertise. For online works, knowledge of content management systems and multiple platform technologies is required and must be able to superviseonline components and wireframe content for display online Strong organisational, time management and conceptual skills necessary.Experience: Line management experience Extensive publication art/design experience; knowledge of scientific publishing Previousline management experience required.
