Job Description

Analyst, Capital Stock and Fleets, Long-term energy modeling Location: NY, Denver, Houston, London, Singapore Grade: 10 ( for internal purposes only ) The Role: Platts Analytics is seeking an energy analyst to join the Future Energy Outlooks (FEO) team to serve as an integrated energy modeler, with a specific focus on capital stock and fleets. This role is in support of the generation and dissemination of the FEOs long-term energy outlooks and balances via the Global Integrated Energy Model. The analyst is expected to play a key role in building out data modelling capabilities including identifying and enriching new datasets across energy end-use sectors and across fuel types, though particular focus is needed in industrial sectors (steel, cement, aluminum, petrochemicals), power generation, buildings, and energy industry own use. For each sector, the analyst is expected to develop dynamic models that can account for disruptive technological change, cost competitiveness and adoption curves of competing technologies, and capital stock turnover. Further, the analyst will provide market insights leveraging your strong modelling skills and knowledge of market drivers for and long-term trends. This role will report to the teams Future Energy Outlooks manager and will be working towards the development of fully integrated cross-commodity energy outlooks. Analysts work individually and in teams to conduct research, consolidating the results into complete, accurate, and compelling analyses. Analysts also support managers in meetings and discussions with clients and, with time, independently. Analysts also may attend outside events and conferences on behalf of the organization. The Team: You will be part of the Future Energy Outlooks team which comprises international specialists providing clients with key insights to understand and manage the risks and opportunities around long term energy trends and the energy transition. FEOs four primary research disciplines are: Pathways, Outlooks, Signposts, and Footprints. The Impact: Platts Analytics is a global team responsible for analyzing, interpreting, and forecasting global energy commodities markets and prices. Our customers represent a wide range of activities across the energy industry and, as a result, our analysis is reviewed and challenged from many different perspectives. You will play a key role in supporting Platts Analytics services and could also play a role in driving growth for clients interested in understanding this rapidly growing space. Compensation/Benefits Information (US Applicants Only): S&P Global states that the anticipated base salary range for this position is $55,900 to $116,100. Base salary ranges may vary by geographic location. In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible for an annual incentive plan. Responsibilities: Be an expert Understand the key technologies and policies impacting the energy transition Model and report on the cost trajectories of key technologies and fuels. Streamline the data management process across different commodity verticals within Platts Analytics, including enhancing the data ingestion process into the Global Integrated Energy Model Detailed focus on supply & demand balances - including trends in consumption, drivers of uptake, factors impacting supply, and global trade. Harness existing data sets, identify new, valuable data sets for collection and analysis and conduct rigorous reviews of the quality of that information. Research, collect, organize, standardize, process, relevant data Communicate expertise Deliver succinct and high-quality written content that demonstrates the expertise outlined above. Create charts, graphs and other visually valuable content that illustrates the trends Platts customers need to follow. Articulate expertise and thought leadership through a variety of media including but not limited to podcasts, webinars, video, conference, and speaking engagements. Engage with customers, market experts, and potential customers. Innovate Use competitive intelligence to stay ahead. Innovate. Be commercially astute through listening to customer. Coordinate Engage with teams across Platts to ensure cohesive and integrated energy system outlooks. Share insights and liaison with key modelers in power, petchems, biofuels, oil, and gas teams to ensure consistency of assumptions and drivers. Represent Platts Analytics expertise and commitment to quality in S&P Global initiatives in the Americas. Basic Qualifications: Minimum of a four year degree or similar level of university education in energy systems, economics, chemistry, engineering, or a similar discipline. 3-5 years of experience conducting modelling or market analysis in the energy industry. Demonstrated experience with management of large datasets and an understanding of fuel switching and capital stock turnover is key. An inherent interest in the energy transition, underlying drivers, and long-term trends is highly desirable. Strong Microsoft Office suite skills are required; python and MySQL are desirable Verbal and written fluency in English is essential. Additional Useful Skills: Topical research experience in alternative or low-carbon technologies is a bonus. Experience advising clients within the energy sector is a bonus. Track record of experience presenting technical material to public audiences, including: webinars, conference presentations, panels of subject matter experts, podcasts, and roundtables. Knowledge & Skills: Proven experience in understanding dynamics around systems of change modelling and technological adoption curves Ability to tackle problems and take independent action is key. Strong communication skills, including: active listening; concise written style, and the ability to communicate complex systems in clear and non-technical way. Ability to recognize trends and provide recommendations and develop logical conclusions. Knowledge of mathematical, statistical and modelling concepts and research methods, including: learning curves and regressions.
