Job Description

Fixed term maternity cover (one year)About usThe Local Government Association speaks with one voice on behalf of local government in England and Wales. Made up of elected representatives from all the different political parties, we aim to set the political agenda and have our say in the national media on the issues that matter to council members. There has never been a more exciting time to work for us.The roleThe LGA is recruiting an adviser to support its policy development work at an incredibly exciting and challenging time for its member councils. COVID-19 has put a spotlight on local government like never before, proving the value of local leadership to the well-being of all our communities. The coming years are likely to see further strain on council finances, as the country strives to recover economically, with councils looking to reflect and improve a new normal in the way we live our lives, the way we shop, or increasingly work from home and respond to the climate emergency. The successful candidate will need to be: Politically and socially aware and be able to demonstrate a proven track record in public policy making. Able to grasp issues quickly, analyse the implications for local government of national policy, and use policy and research skills to generate policy proposals, Demonstrate excellent communications skills to promote and lobby for further powers and funding to local government.You will work as part of a small team, collaborating closely with colleagues in media and public affairs as well as the LGAs political groups. In addition, you will forge effective relationships with our member councils, external partners and stakeholders and central government.The post will be in the LGAs safer communitys policy team and will include a focus on licensing and wider regulatory services issues. With COVID-19 having highlighted both the importance of these services as well as their reduced capacity following local government funding cuts, the successful candidate will help to work and to increase the resilience of these services in the future, as well strengthening regulatory frameworks. There will also be opportunities to support a broader range of community safety issues including councils developing work to tackle modern slavery and work to promote beach and water safety.The requirementsYou will have the knowledge, experience and credibility to engage with government and organisations from across the public, private and voluntary sectors. Confident in taking a strategic and forward-thinking approach, you will have political awareness and a track record of making a difference.The person we offer this post will be an excellent communicator, problem-solver and team player with a proven background in public policy making. You will have experience in using a range of communication tools. A background in regulatory or community safety issues is not necessary but your ability to grasp complex issues quickly will make you stand out.You must have the right to work in the UK, the LGA are unfortunately unable to offer sponsorship visas.
