Job Description

Medical Device Trainer (Band 7)Sector: NHSLocation: SE LondonJob Type: TemporaryDuration of Booking: 3 months, potentially could be longerPay Rate: £22 PAYE per hour OR £28 Umbrella per hourWorking days and hours: 37.5 hours per week (7.5 hours per day, Mon-FrIDuties and Responsibilities

  • Lead, design and manage Trust wide programmes to address training and competency for all clinical staff groups in the safe use of medical devices
  • Develop long term strategies, policies and procedures to underpin and facilitate the implementation of device training for all staff groups.
  • Actively teach and provide highly specialised advice to all staff groups in the use of basic and highly complex medical devices, requiring high-level manual dexterity and hand-to-eye coordination.
  • Be responsible for the management of staff training records in relation to the above.
  • Provide high levels of clinical and technical support to Trust staff and patients in the appropriate use of specialised medical equipment on a day to day basis.
  • Work with the Governance and Risk Department to enable the Trust to meet its requirements with the Annual Health Check, Standards for Better Health, Hygiene Code, NHSLA and CQC Standards pertaining to medical device management, training and competence.
  • Design, lead and monitor medical devices training programmes for all clinical staff including Doctors, Nurses and Allied Health Professions across the Trust in partnership with practice development nurses, clinical educators, staff development managers.
  • Provide an interface between device users and EBME Services (public/private).
  • Network with Medical Device training colleagues, both internally and externally.
  • Monitor and evaluate the implementation of policies and procedures relating to the safe use of medical equipment.
  • Design, manage and perform equipment training needs analyses for all clinical areas in the Trust.
  • Provide monthly reports to the clinical devices managers and other groups when requested.
  • Implement, evaluate and develop the Medical Device Link Persons (Link Nurses) Role across the Trust, in conjunction with key stake holders. Provide bi-annual reports to the Medical Devices Committee on progress.
  • Design, manage and evaluate clinical equipment trials in the clinical areas on each site in conjunction with EBME, Procurement, Ward Managers and in line with Trust Standing Financial Instructions.
  • Design, organise and where appropriate deliver medical devices training and education to both Health Care Assistants and Allied Health Professions in partnership with Training Department and Clinical Educators.
  • Maintain and develop the Medical Devices training & competency database.
  • Carry out individual competency based assessments in response to adverse incident reports to ensure patient safety and staff competency, dealing with possible hostile and/or contentious situations.
  • Participate in the collection of data for research and audit purposes and/or to improve patient care.
  • Skills Required
  • Extensive clinical/technical experience in a variety of health care settings
  • Experience in mentorship, teaching and delivering presentations
  • Experience in undertaking audits
  • Project management qualification (Prince 2) - Ideal
  • Evidence of continuing professional development - Advantageous
  • Information technology skills (including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, e-mail and internet).
  • Able to plan and organise own time and workload
  • In depth knowledge of the operation and clinical applications of a variety of medical devices
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (written and verbal)
  • Ability to communicate with staff across all seniority and disciplines
  • Excellent presentation skills
