Job Description

Reporting to the Assistant Director (Financial Control) this role requires a good understanding of the university’s strategic ambitions for growth in education and other commercial activities, working with senior stakeholders to understand and shape requirementsthat will support the provision of strategic tax planning. The role holder will be required to oversee the provision of strategic tax planning across the University ensuring appropriate treatment and advice is provided, external expertise sought when required,staff are trained and aware of their responsibilities and special projects (including overseas developments) are accurately reflected in the University’s taxation provisions.Main duties and responsibilities:To provide direct support to the Assistant Director (Financial Control) by taking the lead in:

  1. Developing a coherent tax planning strategy relevant to the university’s UK and overseas operations.
  2. Interacting with the International Office to proactively highlight tax implications associated with established and pipeline activity.
  3. Creating and maintaining tax-efficient corporate structure through establishment of UK and overseas entities.
  4. Developing a Transfer Pricing Policy and associated procedures for compliance, monitoring, and reporting.
  5. Attending Project Board and other meetings where tax considerations need to be highlighted.
  6. Ensuring business cases for overseas activity include appropriate provision for potential tax exposure.
  7. Working with and being the key contact for relevant specialists appointed to support with tax advisory services.
  8. Demonstrate initiative and a proactive mindset in discharging the requirements of this role.
  9. Use advanced communication, negotiation, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills to challenge and hold senior managers and directors to account for the compliance with the University’s Financial Regulations.
  10. Lead in specialist tax projects and providing support to strategic developments and partnerships that will enhance the University’s reputation, sustainability, and student impact.
Duties of the role:
  1. Contribute to wider institution-wide leadership activities supporting the strategic vision, values, and objectives of the University, including chairing and leading groups and meetings that stretch beyond the expertise and portfolio of this role.
  2. Undertake any other duties as may be required by the Director of Finance and Procurement or other senior and executive post-holders.
  3. Promote and exhibit DMU values and be a role model for the university’s code of conduct.
  4. Treat all DMU staff, students, contractors, and visitors with dignity and respect.
