Within the Faculty, the School of Engineering and Sustainable Development (ESD) undertakes research to solve real-world problems, the School of Computer Science and Informatics offers industry-standard facilities like our Cyber Security Centre and works with partners like Airbus and Deloitte, and the Leicester Media School brings together technical and creative disciplines across media sectors.RoleWe are seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant wishing to advance their career in a research-driven, multidisciplinary environment and to undertake research in energy and sustainable development. You will be required to carry out a research project that is embarking on evaluating the performance of mini-grids in developing countries of Africa considering sustainability, inclusiveness and governance dimensions. As part of a major international collaborative project that includes academic and industrial partners in Sub-Saharan Africa and the UK, you will be working with leading experts in energy systems and international development.As a Research Assistant, you will focus predominantly on the performance evaluation of mini-grid systems in selected countries of Africa. The work involves data collection from the field and from secondary sources, data analysis using statistical and operational research tools, development of analytical frameworks, and contributions to any tools development. Your work will also include literature reviews, analysis of energy production and consumption data, writing reports, manuscripts and (REF-able) journal papers, maintenance of data systems, supporting project management, as well as liaising with team members (external and internal). Travel will be required within the UK and in Sub-Saharan Africa.Ideal CandidateYou will have the minimum of an MSc, or working towards your PhD in Engineering / Physical Sciences or a related social science discipline, data analysis skills using statistical and operational research packages, and ideally have interests in pro-poor energy access and demand-side participation.To be considered for this role please fill in an application form on our DMU Website.
