General Environmental Operative/ Grass Cutting

Job Description

Job Purpose:To work as part of a team to deliver a seasonally-led best value, customer-focussed service throughout Leicestershire and occasionally, surrounding counties. You will work flexibly, efficiently and effectively to maintain environmental areas such as verges, hedges and footpaths in accordance with statutory requirements.Activities includedare: Grass Cutting, Hand Hedge Trimming, Verge Maintenance.Main Duties and Responsibilities:To undertake various environmental maintenance works to increase expertise in a range of environmental disciplines, and to gain experience in technical practices; safe working procedures and use of equipment and power tools. The list below is indicative of the types of work undertaken during summer months, but is not exhaustive:

  • Grass cutting in urban areas, following set routes and schedules
  • Hedge trimming and other cutting back tasks
  • The list below is indicative of the types of work undertaken during winter months, but is not exhaustive:
  • Edging back to verges
  • Cutting back overhanging foliage and hand hedge trimming
  • Sign Washing
  • General highway maintenance duties
  • To support the Supervisor or Site Team Leader by:
  • taking the role of lead operative as requested when working with other operatives on the same grade, with responsibility for ensuring the correct observance of Health and Safety directives with regards to personal protective equipment, application of Temporary Traffic Management requirements and the safe lifting and handling of materials and plant on site
  • ensuring daily performance targets are met, raising any issues in a timely manner with the Supervisor or Site Team Leader
  • taking the lead when working with temporary staff, to explain the requirements of the job, answer, or escalate to the Supervisor or Site Team Leader any queries and ensure they are made to feel part of the team
  • To carry out duties associated with Highway Works as directed by the line manager or senior person on site e.g.:
  • driving of mowers and trailers
  • operation of powered light plant
  • all driver and operator maintenance associated with the above
  • Person Criteria:Qualifications:
  • NVQ 2 in Highways Maintenance or similar
  • Skilled Road-worker Trades Test Assessment
  • New Roads and Streetworks Act (NRSWA) Qualification (Operative)
  • National Highways Sector Scheme 12D
  • Valid driving licence
  • Valid Large Goods Vehicle Licence and CPC Trained with current DQC Card
  • Or
  • Demonstrable evidence of the skills and experience as outlined below, together with a commitment to attain the essential qualifications
  • Experience:
  • Working in a highways or civil engineering environment
  • Ability to take measurements and calculate quantities e.g. areas, volumes and weights
  • Use of information technology (eg personal computer, PDS, mobile phones etc) in a work-related context
  • Knowledge of:
  • Extensive knowledge of construction specifications, materials, compaction and workmanship requirements.
  • Extensive knowledge of safe working practices when using plant and machinery
  • Construction Health, Safety and Environmental requirements and safe working procedures
  • Legislation including driver’s hours, PPE and manual handling
  • Chapter 8 Traffic Management Regulations
  • Knowledge of Noise at Work Regulations
  • Skills and Competencies:
  • Able to drive a mower
  • Able to tow and manoeuvre a trailer
  • Core communication skills both written and verbal
  • Able and willing to work with everyone in the team
