Job Description

GUY’S AND ST. THOMAS’ HOSPITAL NHS FOUNDATION TRUSTAcute MedicineSenior Clinical Fellow (Registrar Level) in Acute Internal Medicine (with optional Specialist Interest)From £49,036 p.a excl. of LZ (depending on level of experience)Nodal point 4Fixed Term – 6 Months, with possible scope to extendFull Time – 40 hours per weekBoth Guy’s and St Thomas’ have central London locations with stunning views across the Thames and are close to many tourist attractions, such as the Houses of Parliament and the South Bank Arts Complex. Both sites have easy access to major transport links.Guy’s and St Thomas’ (GSTT) is one of the largest hospital trusts in the country, comprising two of London’s oldest and best known teaching hospitals. The hospitals have a long history, dating back almost 900 years, and have been at the forefront of medical progress and innovation since they were founded. Both hospitals have built on these traditions and continue to have a reputation for excellence and innovation.We are looking for an enthusiastic doctor (of CT3+ experience) for this dynamic, stimulating and pluripotent clinical post that offers outstanding experience in Acute Internal Medicine and General Medicine, in a prestigious unit that enjoys an excellent friendly working atmosphere, in a world-class academic teaching hospital.The post will be based primarily at St Thomas’ Hospital London, to start as soon as possible.Acute Internal Medicine (AIM) at GSTT is instrumental to the Trust’s delivery of acute medical care of the highest quality, with an expanding and innovative team who provide expert assessment and management of acute medical patients and those presenting with medical emergencies from the full range of medical subspecialties.As a tertiary centre for several specialties, and in its unique central London location, the post provides access to a highly eclectic and interesting case mix, with superb depth of clinical experience, medical patient exposure and educational value for the post-holder regardless of the sub-specialty eventually aspired to.The Acute Medicine department also provides a highly successful Acute Care undergraduate training programme, including high-fidelity simulation, to final year medical students from King’s College London, which the post-holder will have opportunity to contribute to.The post-holder will rotate through the Acute Admission Ward (AAW), the Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) / Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Unit, and potentially the Acute Medicine Hot Clinic. They will gain invaluable experience as a clinical decision maker and supervisor of junior colleagues in the acute medical setting (at registrar level), in a supported training environment with robust consultant presence, whilst having opportunity to develop or consolidate medical procedural competencies and subspecialist interests.The AAW provides exposure to some of the highest acuity in medical patients at the Trust, and we are currently exploring the development of acute higher dependency enhanced care medical models on the ward.The Ambulatory Care Unit covers all the medical components of the national Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) network directory. The organisation is at the forefront as an accelerator site for new national plans to improve access pathways to Acute Medicine SDEC and Hot Clinics from GPs, 111, LAS and the community.The post-holder will work alongside the consultants in Acute Medicine and a dedicated team of junior doctors including Acute Internal Medicine ST trainees, non-training Registrars, Core Trainees and Foundation Doctors, Clinical Nurse Specialists, as well as experienced nursing staff and allied health professionals. For suitably qualified candidates, there may be opportunity to contribute to the on-call rota for General Medicine at registrar level, or contribute to outpatient specialty clinics (if desired). The team interacts on a daily basis with a number of other medical subspecialties.For successful applicants, there is an option to incorporate and/or develop a Specialist Interest area within the existing timetable, with time specially allocated to education, audit/research, exam preparation and continuing professional development (CPD) embedded in the existing rota, which promotes work-life balance. While it is not compulsory, we welcome the expression of interest to develop in any Specialist Interest areas, with a wide range of specialties available in this prestigious centre. The most recent appointee had a special interest in Research, and also went on to be appointed as Chief Registrar at the Trust.
