Job Description

Extended Working Day, Band 6 Biomedical Scientist, Virology:

  • We are seeking a proactive, motivated, enthusiastic and experienced Band 6 Biomedical Scientist (BMS) to work in the Virology section of the Infection Sciences Department at St Thomas Hospital. The successful candidate would be expected to hold HCPC State Registration as a BMS, as well as have completed the specialist Virology portfolio or equivalent.The post holder would be expected to join a team that works an average 37.5 hours/week and be prepared to work as part of an extended working day (EWD) rota that includes week day Core (09:00am to 17:30pm), Early (08:00am to 16:30pm), and Late (11:30am to 20:00pm) shifts and Weekend/Bank Holiday (09:00am to 17:00pm).Infection Sciences Virology is UKAS accredited and have a large team of staff consisting of 6 B7 senior BMS, 10 B6 BMS, 3 B5 BMS and 15 B3 MLAs. Virology consists of two sections; serology and molecular. The serology section is highly automated, using up to date analysers such as the Abbott Architect (including SARS-CoV-2 IgG testing), Diasorin Liaison/XL and the Biomerieux Vidas 3 as well as a selection of manual assays. The molecular section uses the QiaSymphony extraction platform, Qiagility sample handler, ABI 7500 Real-Time and Aus Diagnostics EasyPlex and HighPlex instruments (respiratory panels and SARS-CoV-2). HIV, Hepatitis C and Hepatitis B viral loads are currently performed on the Cobas AmpliPrep/TaqMan system, but we are switching anytime soon to the Abbott Alinity M instrument). Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Trichomonas, Mycoplasma genitalium and SARS-CoV-2 molecular assays are performed on the Hologic Panther platforms.
