Job Description

REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFICERBased in the NEU Eastern region (Kennett, CB8 8GY)Permanent, Full-time or Part-time Commencing salary £43,752 perannumThe National Education Union is a force for changein the world of education, bringing together more than 450,000 teachers,lecturers, support staff and leaders working in maintained and independentschools and colleges across the UK. The successful candidate will contribute to theadvancement of the unions aims by supporting the implementation of nationalorganising strategies to meet the key challenges faced, in particular,negotiating with employers to ensure appropriate arrangements for Trade Unionrepresentatives to be able to conduct their duties in line with the currentlegislation. They will do this by working with otherstakeholders towards the establishment of self-sustaining negotiation andconsultation structures within the regions academies, free schools and MultiAcademy Trusts (MATs), ensure local democratic accountability, support localactivists in the development of branch structures and build capacity andactivism at all levels of the union. A key aspect of the role will be torecruit, develop and support new activists and representatives to ensure theirengagement and empowerment. They will demonstrate a good knowledge andunderstanding of employment law; apply initiative and analytical skills toproblem-solving and exercise judgement; use influencing and negotiating skills;have previous experience and knowledge of working effectively (in a paid orelected position) within a democratic membership organisation/trade union;previous experience of acting as an advocate for members at workplace or locallevel; frequently dealing with sensitive and difficult situations tactfully andconfidentially. This role will entail extensive travel, regionallyand nationally which may require occasional stays away from home and thereforea full and valid Driving Licence is an essential requirement. In addition to salary, we offer good conditionsincluding a non-superannuable luncheon allowance currently set at £1035, 35days annual leave plus Christmas closure days and a final salary pensionscheme.
