Permitting Officer Grade 3Ipswich Salary£24,213 pro-rataGradeStaff Grade 3Post Type/ Working PatternPermanent, Full Time, Part Time/Job ShareInterview Datesweek commencing 24th October and 31st OctoberLevel of security checks requiredBasic checkAbout usIf youre part of the Environment Agency (EA), youre working with us to protect and improve the environment, tackling issues of national importance. Were based across England, and our responsibilities span industry regulation, flood defences, land contamination,water quality, fisheries and conservation.Such broad scope of work calls for diverse, multi-skilled teams. Together, well promote sustainable growth, tackle climate change and secure a better future for everyone.As a permitting officer youll be playing an important role in our work on protecting the environment. You may assess applications for a range of environmental permitted activities across the country, from landfills to metal recycling, from sewer overflowsto abstraction from rivers to supply drinking water, to spreading waste on land for agricultural benefit. Environmental Permits set out the responsibilities and limitations on the activities we regulate. You will speak with permit applicants from multi-nationalcompanies to individual householders. Youll carry out technical assessments according to EA processes and regulatory obligations, to protect the environment and local communities.Youll join our dedicated National Permitting Service, assessing applications for environmental permits and licenses. Working with a team of permitting officers, youll assess a caseload of applications, work on environmental permitting legislation and makedecisions on applications.You will work in one of our permitting regimes: Waste, Water Quality, Water Resources or Mobile Plant.Its highly varied, challenging work that plays a key role in creating a cleaner, greener, safer environment. Youll develop relationships with a range of partners and support key functions including flooding and environmental response.What do I needWhilst relevant work experience would be an advantage, its less important than key transferable skills and personal qualities were looking for.Youll need to have:

  • Manage your own time and workload and meeting performance targets related to you and your team.
  • Be able to make and justify informed, timely decisions
  • Have excellent communication skills the ability to build strong relationships with your customers
  • Have great IT skills including experience of working with data, managing information and using tools like Word, Excel and specialist digital tools relevant to your job.
  • Be skilled in data/information management and be able to gather and manipulate data by analysing and tailoring it to your audience
  • Be able to have difficult conversations with customers and be confident making risk-based decisions
Experience of environment permitting isnt essential: however, youll have some experience or interest in the environment and regulation.
