Job Description

Are you looking to embark on a career in health and safetyOr perhaps you’re newly-qualified and looking to develop your skills and knowledge in a varied environmentIf so, we’ve got an exciting opportunity for someone to join our team.We work to support our trading estate and Head Office in ensuring they are operating safely and legally, with the ultimate aim of keeping our customers and colleagues safe.Our business is made up of over 120 food stores and 60 funeral branches, as well as a stonemasonry factory and travel branches - each with different needs, requirements and challenges. Therefore, you can expect the role of Health and Safety Advisor to be varied! However, we also think it’s an exciting role for the right person - there’ll be loads of development opportunities and you’ll get to meet and work with multiple stakeholders from across our business.It would be great if you already hold a relevant qualification (e.g. NEBOSH), however, we also welcome applications from candidates without any previous experience or qualifications with the view to supporting them through an Apprenticeship.Role ResponsibilityAs Health and Safety Advisor, you’ll be responsible for:

  • Providing advice, guidance and support to colleagues relating to health & safety, food safety and age-restricted products (in relation to legislation and internal policies)
  • Monitoring accidents and incidents, providing follow-up support and undertaking related investigations, where required (include liaising with / notifying local authorities and HSE in accordance with RIDDOR)
  • Assisting with risk assessments and updating safe operating procedures
  • Supporting the ongoing development, review and implementation of policies and procedures
  • Administering various processes and databases (e.g. accident database, driver compliance and training database)
  • Supporting the Head of Health and Safety and Health and Safety Manager by compiling data, statistics and other key information
  • Conducting site visits and inspections
  • Keeping up to date with changes in legislation
  • Ideal CandidateIt would be great if you have experience of working in a retail and / or multi-site environment, or in office administration. However, the following skills and experience are what you’ll really need to be successful as Health and Safety Advisor:
  • A working knowledge of Health and Safety in the workplace
  • IT literate, with experience of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, able to engage with stakeholders at all levels
  • Great organisation skills, able to balance multiple tasks without comprising on accuracy / attention to detail
  • Good standard of Maths and English
  • Able to compile information and present written reports
  • Willingness to work towards relevant health and safety qualification (if not already qualified)
  • This role will require regular travel across the East of England Co-op’s trading areas in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex.
