Job Description

An opportunity has arisen for a Principal Metallurgist to join an innovative, clean energy organisation at its state-of-the-art facility in West Sussex. As a Principal Metallurgist you will play a pivotal role in leading and developing experimental methodologies to advance the clients understanding of performance and ageing of metallic components used within their products.To be successful as a Principal Metallurgist you should hold a PhD or MSc degree in a metallurgy or closely related discipline, possess experience working with various material applications including metal alloys and coatings and ideally possess In-depth understanding of degradation mechanisms of ferritic stainless steels in both high temperature applications and electrochemical applications.Principal Metallurgist Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical leadership and delivery on key projects in the development of SOC technologies from concept to product launch with focus on metallurgical challenges.
  • Ensuring that the team provides high quality subject matter expert advice to the wider business for metallurgical and coatings solutions.
  • Providing clear development paths, training and required resources to the team.
  • Supporting resolution of issues (technical, scientific, analytical, IP, etc) that affect, or have the potential to affect, the development of SOC technologies, component manufacturing processes, meeting "life" and "cost" targets for product development.
  • Developing models to predict mechanisms through life.
  • Identifying improved materials and processes required to meet project technical objectives within agreed timescales.
    • Principal Metallurgist Key Requirements:
  • Hold a PhD or MSc degree in a metallurgy or closely related discipline.
  • Possess experience working with various material applications including metal alloys and coatings and ideally possess In-depth understanding of degradation mechanisms of ferritic stainless steels in both high temperature applications and electrochemical applications.
  • Knowledge of modelling tools for oxidation, corrosion for alloys at temperature and some experience with modelling.
  • Expertise in 6-sigma/DoE techniques.
  • Practical experience from working in advanced laboratories with complex test benches.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in conventional and specialised techniques employed for:
  • Measuring all properties of materials and components to assess performance, durability and failure modes.
  • Analysing microstructural characterisation of metallic materials.
  • Identifying root cause(s) of degradation and failure of components.
    • Salary: £.
