Job Description

I. Position SummaryReporting to the Business Development Manager, the Business Development Officer is responsible for identifying new funding opportunities and helping convert prospective major donors, foundations and corporations into donors to increase donations to MalalaFund. This position will be based in London and will support the expansion of Malala Funds donor network to the UK and Europe.II. ResponsibilitiesProject Research

  • Leads on all prospect research across corporations, foundations and individuals.
  • Advise on evolving funding sources and trends to support the Development teams new business strategy ahead of changes, trends or challenges in the philanthropy space.
  • Proactively researches relevant RFPs and major funding opportunities.
  • Develops and manages the organisations target prospect list, donor profiles and briefing book materials.
  • Works closely with the Development Associate to ensure contacts and opportunities are up to date and being tracked closely in Salesforce.
Donor Cultivation
  • Works closely with the Business Development Manager to cultivate and solicit prospective major donors, foundations and corporations.
  • Supports fundraising conversations and pitches to potential donors by helping with outreach efforts, attending and securing donor meetings (via phone call, video and/or in person) and advising and preparing staff for conversations with prospects.
  • Represents Malala Funds values in interactions with prospects and actively contributes to making Malala Fund a diverse and equitable workplace through inclusive practice and openness to different perspectives, cultures and ideas.
  • Writes concise and compelling development documents, including both unrestricted and restricted fundraising proposals, concept papers, presentations and pitch decks, and other marketing collateral.
  • Support the expansion of new business revenue streams, including the organisations planned giving program.
  • Manages the grant agreement and contract process to onboard a new donor.
U.K. Fundraising
  • Collaborates with the Business Development Manager to launch Malala Funds U.K. fundraising strategy by serving as primary contact for all U.K. donors.
  • Leads on building Malala Funds network in the U.K. and Europe by representing the organisation at conferences, meetings and other interactions with prospective donors.
  • Advises on U.K. philanthropy best practices and fundraising approach and identifies key new donor audiences to engage in the region.
  • Works closely with the Business Development Manager to advance engagement strategies in the U.K. and Europe to reach new donors, build relationships and solicit potential donors.
  • Possibility of travel within the U.K. and Europe (if safe and in accordance with Malala Funds COVID-19 safety policy)

III. Knowledge, Experience and BehavioursEssential
  • Excellent prospect research skills and ability to manage prospects within a donor CRM.
  • Strong communication and solicitation skills, both oral and written.
  • Understanding of the U.K. philanthropy space and fundraising best practice.
  • Proven substantial fundraising experience, with a focus in the UK.
  • Demonstrated experience drafting compelling fundraising materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex programmes to donor audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience securing various donor types, including major donors, foundations, corporations, and developing campaigns.
  • Experience with UK Gift Aid.
  • Ability to create and manage a busy workload, and work effectively with a wide variety of people in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and frequent deadlines.
  • Strong commitment to Malala Funds mission, purpose and values.

  • Strong understanding of the issues surrounding girls education, particularly in the countries where Malala Fund works.
  • Experience with European fundraising outlets, eg. the U.K. Postcode Lottery.
  • Experience fundraising both domestically and internationally, including travel.
  • Experience building a network of new donors.
  • Ideal candidate is socially confident, ambitious, analytical and personable.
