Job Description

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Along with the Director of Business & Operations and the Director of Education & SEN as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, lead the strategic development of the school in the allocated areas of responsibility, embedding, maintaining and monitoring to ensure the highest standards
  • Along with the Director of Business & Operations and the Director of Education & SEN deputising for the Headteacher in their absence
  • Work between both the Tower Road and Undershaw sites and in the Post 16 area to ensure even leadership coverage across the school and age ranges
  • Line manage the Clinical/Medical/Therapy Lead who has responsibility for medical/first aid practice and who line manages the multidisciplinary team of therapists
  • Contribute towards the line management/coaching of the Assistant Headteachers (HT is line manager)
  • Lead and manage the team of staff connected specifically to the areas of responsibility above, as well as leading the promotion and maintenance of standards across the full staff and student body
  • Be responsible for assessing impact or quality of provision regularly in line with the school monitoring systems and producing reports for the areas of responsibility
  • Have responsibility for these areas of the School Development Plan
  • Be responsible for reporting to stakeholders such as Trustees, SLT, Local Authorities and parents. Be responsible for keeping up to date on all latest legislation regarding Keeping Children Safe in Education and training / updating staff accordingly
  • Be responsible for updating school policies to reflect latest legislations.
  • Safeguarding
  • Act as the schools primary DSL in line with the DSL role profile (below)
  • Act as the central point of contact for all safeguarding concerns and record keeping, leading a large team of DDSL trained staff
  • Ensuring the Headteacher is kept fully appraised of all safeguarding matters in a timely manner
  • Promote a culture of confident and proactive safeguarding in our school community to ensure policies are lived and breathed
  • Ensure that all e-safety concerns and alerts are followed up in line with process
  • Set the highest standard of example in terms of safeguarding and professional behaviours in line with the most up to date guidance, including KCSIE and WTTSC and embed these within the culture of the school
  • Lead on reporting safeguarding related information to the Governors, external reviewers and in inspections/audits
  • Pastoral Care
  • Assess and review the specific pastoral care needs of Stepping Stones School and develop a strategy that aligns with our offer and is embedded within our curriculum moving forwards
  • Develop and deliver a bespoke and innovative pastoral care strategy that aligns with the wider development plan, strategic plan and aspirational pursuit of the school to provide a world class holistic education to students with SEND
  • Collaboratively shape and lead the team of Form Tutors and Class Teachers as well as TAs/ELSAs to refine and develop their roles as they relate to pastoral care of the students
  • Seek opportunities to embed the teaching of protective behaviours in the curriculum and through assemblies and line managing the PSHE & Assemblies Lead
  • Although this is a non-teaching role to contribute to the delivery of PSHE and Life Skills
  • Line manage the Family Liaison Officer and oversee the development of the support package offered to families in line with the schools strategic plan
  • Behaviour & Attitudes
  • Lead on this Ofsted area across the school
  • Lead on the research around the most appropriate positive behaviour and de-escalation approaches to create a strategy for Stepping Stones School which best meets the needs of our cohort, providing training, processes and support which ensures it is embedded and consistent across the school, with a focus on seeing behaviour as communication
  • Empower staff to understand and manage complex behaviours, with a focus on de-escalation strategies and reflective practice
  • Devise and lead strategies to support students, staff and their families in the follow up of any incidents or more complex or challenging situations, including arranging for bespoke support or training 1
  • Maintain records and track data in relation to behaviour, incidents, safeguarding and attendance etc. and produce regular reports which trigger prompt and effective interventions
  • Develop pastoral tracking and reporting processes and ensure that they are interlinked with other reporting processes within the school and that data is shared and used meaningfully
  • With the Headteacher, ensure that the school meets statutory and regulatory requirements in relation to pastoral care and safeguarding, including contributing to inspection and audit preparation and processes
  • Welfare
  • Lead on Mental & Physical Health across the school and community
  • Lead on Equality/Diversity/Prevent/British Values/SMSC across the school and community
  • Devise and oversee the new staff Induction programme for start of year and in-year joiners
  • Promote the wellbeing of students, staff and families through a range of strategies
  • Communication & Collaborative Working
  • Collaborate as a member of the Senior Leadership Team across sites and across all teams ensuring that all areas of leadership are integrated and complement each other
  • Manage policies around the areas of responsibility and ensure they are kept updated
  • Update policies related to pastoral care and ensure they are reviewed and communicated as required, including updates and reminders to ensure policies are lived as well as read
  • Maintain confidentiality in line with the schools policies
  • Manage the communication of information relating to pastoral care both on a need to know basis and ensuring that staff are kept updated and appraised as appropriate
  • Chair regular team meetings and line management meetings, keeping records of all communications
  • Contribute to SEN documentation, information gathering and reviews as required
  • Promote an integrated way of working ensuring that all teams and support networks collaborate and take a multi-disciplinary approach to supporting the students
