Job Description

Safety Case EngineerSF35335Faslane, HelensburghSalary 38,000 - £48,000About the roleThe Safety Justification Group (SJG) are looking for Nuclear Powered Warships (NPW) operating experienced Engineers to support the production, maintenance and development of Nuclear Safety Cases at HMNB Clyde. As a Safety Case Engineer youll be responsiblefor the justifification of Nuclear Propulsion (NP) activities and the impact on infrastructure at HMNB Clyde.Key responsibilities will include:

  • Assist the Senior Safety Case Engineer in maximising the utilisation and the efficiency of all the departments resource.
  • Produces robust Safety Justifications for the authorisation of operations affecting Nuclear Safety and Explosive Safety at HMNB Clyde in accordance with Ministry of Defence (MOD) Authorisation Conditions, Base Policies (Standards), Regulatory documentation,Naval Nuclear Safety Principles and Statutory Legislation.
  • Responsible for the production and maintenance of Safety Cases and all supporting documentation.
  • Conducts Fault Identification studies (e.g. Hazard Identification (HAZID) and Hazard and Operability studies (HAZOP) in accordance with appropriate site guidance in order to facilitate the development of the safety argument.
  • Conducts As Low As reasonably Practicable (ALARP) workshops in accordance with appropriate site guidance, in order to determine whether operations/activities are ALARP. This involves undertaking optioneering studies, cost-benefit analysis and appraisalstudies, with the aim of reducing risk to an optimum level that is tolerable.
  • Acts as departmental representative at on-site nuclear committees and provide technical expertise in support of Safety Case documentation.
  • Provides departmental input and verification into the base Maintenance Concession process and provide justification/assurance that any concessions presented to Authorisation Groups do not impact on the Safety Case for the Facility or Utility.
  • Undertakes Peer Reviews, Technical Assessments and Verifications of safety documentation produced within SJG in order to demonstrate robust and valid safety justifications.
What do I need to do the roleYoull be educated to degree level in a STEM discipline or have completed an Engineering Apprenticeship plus a minimum of HNC (or equivalent)We would also like you to have the following:
  • Experience as a Cat A Watchkeeper.
  • Experience in the production and review of Nuclear Safety Cases and experience presenting their output to Safety Committees.
  • A good understanding of current nuclear good practice and legislative/regulatory requirements.
  • A track record of making intelligent evidence based decisions using various sources of data.
  • Working knowledge of Naval Nuclear Reactor plants would be desirable.
Lastly, youll have well-developed presentation and communication skills and excellent relationship-building and networking skills.What else do I need to knowThe successful candidate will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements.
