Job Description

About the role We have an exciting new post created within our practice as a Clinical Coder Team Leader, at the heart of our practice management team to work across both our sites at The Eden Surgeries in Hatfield Heath and Hatfield Broad Oak, on a full time basis The role will lead the Clinical Coding team and to oversee the clinical coding function across the business.The post-holder will be responsible for developing a structured comprehensive training program for the Clinical Coding team in order to achieve and maintain the highest level of competency and accreditation. Ensuring that clinical coding training reflects all national rules and datasets by keeping abreast of national Clinical Coding & Auditing developments and cascading this knowledge to all clinical coders.The role includes:

  • Designing and building a Clinical Coding strategy for the Surgery. This will include the development and introduction of a comprehensive and formal training and audit program.
  • Undertake regular reviews of clinical coding processes and develop introduce new procedures where necessary to improve coding practice over both sites.
  • Responsible for the abstraction, analysis and interpretation of highly complex clinical information found within patient’s health records, use judgement and knowledge in assigning the correct codes when the information provided is conflicting.
  • Translate and assign the most accurate clinical codes for diagnosis, co-morbidities and procedures undertaken for all discharged and transferred patients.
  • Ability to code all specialties at a high level of accuracy.
  • People Management - Provide expert advice to clinical and non-clinical staff with regards to complex clinical coding rules
  • Training - todevelop the Clinical Coding Team and be prepared to design and deliver training to all staff in the team, to act as mentor and support.
  • Take a lead in designing and undertaking audits and the production of reports with analysis, conclusions and recommendations, along with creation of action plans

You will have the following skills and previous track record within the healthcare sector:
  • Highly developed specialist experience within the Clinical Coding function with an in-depth specialist knowledge of clinical coding rules, standards and conventions across a wide range of specialities
  • Experience of implementing and management of change in clinical coding working practices
  • You will be confident to analyse the data and identify any trends or areas for improvement and increase in depth of coding
  • You will be a leader and an exceptional manager in being able to motivate your team members through excellent communication skills
  • Ideally you will have a NCCQ National Clinical Coding Qualification and be educated to degree level or equivalent
  • It would be advantageous to have a management qualification and previous experience in leadership and supervision of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ideally you be an approved Clinical Coding Auditor and/or Clinical Auditor Trainer or have relevant experience in this role
  • You will have strong IT skills and be fully conversant in SystmOne, Coding and other in-house Primary Care systems, including MS suite
  • Experience of managing small to medium projects and developing / implementing policies and procedures
  • Experience of building effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders with conflicting priorities in order to engage with and educate them on clinical coding
