Howdens Joinery is recruiting an Environmental Advisor to join our Safety, Health and Environmental team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone to join our team who can provide direction, analysis and risk intelligence relating to Timber legality,Timber certification, Extended Producer Responsibility Obligations for Howdens Joinery Group and Environmental aspects within the Supply operations. With a significant multibillion strategic growth plan, it’s a truly exciting time to be part of our growingteam at Howdens.Reporting directly to the Head of SHE, this role will be integral in providing specialist technical risk analysis to Commercial teams and Senior Leadership teams on timber legality assessment and due diligence across a timber sourcing portfolio of circa18,000 sku’s and 230 suppliers globally.The role will be central to the Company’s compliance to producer obligations for Packaging, WEEE and Batteries and, advise the Operational/Commercial teams on their timber FSC / PEFC Chain of Custody and ISO14001 Environmental management system requirements.This role will have responsibility for advising operations across 5 primary sites and the internal transport function.What will I be doing as Environmental Advisor The role is wide ranging and will require the role holder to be involved in, and responsible for;EU / UK Timber Regulation Due Diligence

• Ensuring that Howdens Due Diligence process meets the regulatory requirements set by the UK Competent Authority (CA).
• Maintain accreditation to the Timber Trade Federation (TTF) Responsible Purchasing Policy (RPP).
• Create and maintain procedures for compliance to EU / UKTR.
• Support other areas of the business in the application of EU / UKTR in other processes e.g. procurement and vendor selection.

FSC / PEFC Timber Chain of Custody

• Manage and maintain the ‘Central Office’ elements of the FSC / PEFC Chain of Custody systems.
• Ensure procedures are in place to provide the system framework for effective operation.
• Support internal and external auditing of the FSC / PEFC systems to maintain 3rd party certification.

Producer Obligations (Extended Producer Obligations EPR)

• Collate and sense check data from the business on packaging / WEEE / Batteries use for use in the regulatory submission to relevant compliance schemes and environment agencies in UK, NI and ROI.
• Provide annual packaging data submissions to the Head of SHE in order to meet the legal requirements.

Environmental Management

• Provision of Environmental Management advice to Operational teams across the business and work to foster a local ownership model of environmental management with the support from Site SHE Advisors.
• Monitor and report on environmental performance and provide independent input to investigations where necessary.
• Perform inspections and audits to ensure environmental compliance and best practice is maintained.
• Ensure that the business remains aware of key environmental legislation, future legislation, and other requirements.
• Working with external stakeholders to identify environmental best practice and supporting the business in achieving best practice where appropriate.

What do I need to qualify for the Environmental Advisor:

• In-depth knowledge of due diligence systems and assessments, ideally focusing on illegal timber.
• Experience in operating producer obligations systems for packaging / WEEE / batteries.
• Associate Membership of IEMA.
• IEMA Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management.
• Internal or Lead Auditor qualification in ISO Standards.
• Experience in providing SHE advice, direction and tools to Management Teams in a fast-moving, operational environment.
• Breadth and depth of technical competency in the fields of Environmental Management.
• Must hold a full driving licence.
