Job Description

On behalf of our client, we are looking to recruit a Deputy Manager and NACWO to provide support for the day-to-day management of a biomedical services facility. You will be maintaining animal husbandry and supporting the operational needs of a multitudeof research projects. In your role you will assist in ensuring that the requirements of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 are met and that the highest standards of animal welfare.Benefits:

Basic Requirements:
  • BSc Degree in a relevant science, technical or research subject or relevant qualification.
  • Institute of Animal Technology qualification level 3 or above is desirable.
  • A Home office Licence is vital.
  • Experience of working in a rodent BSU facility and managing transgenic colonies is advantageous.
  • NACWO qualification is essential.
  • Excellent knowledge in the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.
  • Have the ability to run and maintain scientific devices, instrumentation and experimental procedures.
  • Experienced in writing and reviewing Health and safety documents including - SOPs, risk assessments and COSHH assessments.
  • Able to train, guide and develop new users and members.
  • Plan, prioritise and organise work and have a high level of communications skills.
  • Be supportive and encouraging of others, clarify the requirements of team members.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Actively using personal license under Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 including transgenic breeding, basic anaesthesia/ surgery and procedures (with training as required).
  • Maintenance and coordination of breeding colonies with Licence Holders, setting up breeding pairs, sexing and weaning animals and monitoring pregnancies.
  • Care for the breeding colonies and meticulous unit records of rodent breeding programmes
  • Organising animal quarterly and annual health screens
  • Ensure that overall standards of the service including H&S, compliance and regulatory standards are adhered to by all users within their degree of influence.
  • Provide assistance and advice on more of an independent basis.
  • Assist the NTCO in ensuring that competency assessment processes take place (through personal supervision and assessment of others where possible, or with other appropriately qualified persons) within the facilities.
  • Guide service users in workshops, laboratories and other specialist teaching/research facilities.
  • Build and develop on-going relationships to ensure effective communications and effective working.
  • Identify an appropriate existing method of analysis or investigation according to the data and objectives.
  • Take responsibility for maintaining facility security both with respect to staff and animals.
