Job Description

We are launching our 2023 Trainee Team Manager Programme and are looking for a diverse range of people to join us. Here at SGN we are all about people and building safe experiences for our customers through delivering their gas safely, reliably and efficiently.The gas network industry is preparing for its next exciting new chapter, which will see further significant investment in our assets to ensure continuity of gas supply to our customers throughout our communities. Our people are at the heart of SGN and ourTeam Managers are therefore critical to success.Following our 2-year training programme, you will be responsible for field-based staff and contractors, carrying out safety-critical repairs and maintenance on SGN’s gas network.The RoleThis role is ideally suited to someone who has worked in a technical or customer focussed environment, perhaps with experience of managing a team of people. We’re looking for someone with the capability to inspire and get the best out of their team so areopen minded to applications from different industries. You might be a recent graduate in any discipline or have attained an HND (or equivalent) - we’re looking for individuals capable of building on their education and experience to develop a broad range ofskills required to be Team Managers of the future.Key Responsibilities will include;

  • Management of a technical workforce on a day-to-day basis including all line management activities
  • Set operational targets for the team, utilising and embedding a robust performance management system and ethos. Engage the team on their targets and coach them to enable delivery, managing under performance as required
  • Role model for exemplary standards of personal and process safety
  • Manage resources both day to day and looking forward 3 months in advance to ensure required resources levels are in place, planning, reallocating and reprioritising as required
  • Liaise with external stakeholders, for example highway Authorities, other Utilities and members of the public to exchange information, maintain positive working relationships and enhance SGN’s reputation
  • Manage customer complaints to a successful conclusion balancing SGN’s reputation and commercial considerations
  • Provide on-the-job support where there are unforeseen issues for example, challenging technical problems, traffic management issues, customer issues
  • Overseeing assigned work programmes or projects from initiation through to closure
  • Assisting in-house projects team design capacity (e.g. CAD capability preferential) and project management tasks
  • Assist with strategic planning and delivery of Energy Futures solutions for Remote Networks
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
  • Previous experience of managing a team, preferably in a technical safety critical working environment
  • Evidence of performance management and coaching to improve performance
  • Technical knowledge and competence in the relevant process is desirable
  • Knowledge of gas legislation, procedures and related health and safety policies are desirable
  • Excellent customer service skills and experience of dealing with customer complaints
  • Ability to communicate and influence people at all levels, both internally and externally
  • Commercial awareness with the ability to understand and interpret operational Management Information and Key Performance Indicators and to articulate this to their team
  • Adaptable and able to "think on your feet" in order to respond tactically to changing operational requirements, for example in response to an emergency situation
  • Previous experience of managing projects is desirable (for Connections Team Manager role)
  • Educated to HNC level or possess the equivalent in operational experience
  • SCO1,2,4,5, IOSH Managing Safety, Competent Person and Authorising Engineer are mandatory requirements for the role. (If not in place incumbent must work towards qualification within a reasonable timeframe)
You will be supported by highly skilled engineers and colleagues, who will provide opportunity for you to develop your competencies in real work situations, supplementing your ongoing learning through our tailored development programme. Over the course ofthe programme you may be required to attend a number of training venues, which may be a distance away from your home. When you are required to stay away from home, we will arrange travel and accommodation.
