Job Description

Annual salary: up to £28,000.00 Due to a period of organic growth the Team at Mears Housing Management are looking to recruit a Paralegal, If you are looking to further your Career within an award winning business this could be the move for you.The Opportunity - The Paralegal will provide Legal support in order to meet the growing demands in the number of legal claims for possession issued by the legal department and to defend counterclaims issued by tenants on the basis of breach of the landlord’s repairing covenants/ breach of Equality Act 2010; public law defence; breach of tenancy deposit rules Paralegals are required to develop their own caseload and assist solicitor with contested claims heading for trial.As a Paralegal you will play a key part in the future development of the legal department who support the work of Mears Housing Management.This is a Permanent position located at our site in Enfield, we are offering a Salary of £28,000.What are we looking for - In order to be considered we are looking to recruit a Paralegal that has completed the BVC/LPC course, with commercial experience in landlord and tenant law as a paralegal.Responsibilities of the role:

  • Income collection - Advise team on law and procedure and compliance with rent arrears pre-action protocol; Advise team on CPR rules and witness statement content; Prepare and issue s8 notices and Notice to quit; Prepare and issue claims; Book counsel to attend hearings and negotiate fees; Attend to any issues before and after hearing; if defence and counterclaim is filed prepare all legal work up to and including trial
  • Update case management system (s)
  • Ensuring the efficient progress of general legal matters pursued by business and/or defend legal claims made by landlords/tenants
  • Liaising with clients, local authorities, counsel and other solicitors
  • Diary management - court dates, appointments , limitation dates , Key dates
  • Landlord Handback requests - Pursue legal claims on behalf of the local authority; terminate agreements with local authorities and seek updates on when vacant possession shall be returned ; pursue legal claims against the local authority in the event of breach of contract
  • Keeping landlords fully informed on the status of their hand back request at reasonable and regular intervals
  • Assist solicitor with trial issues such disclosure; inspection and preparation of witness statements
  • Assist the solicitor with defended claims for possession based on Disrepair; Human rights challenges and other vulnerability issues
  • Collate paper records for the purposes of legal disclosure;
  • Prepare and send documents to opponent (Inspection)
  • Review disclosure material received from opponent
  • Liaise with Portfolio manager to prepare witness statements ahead of trial
  • Prepare and index and trial bundle (x 5 copies) for use at trial
  • Discuss any outstanding matters with PM ahead of trial
  • Prepare instructions to counsel ahead of trial
  • Prepare instructions to counsel to settle claims
  • Post- trial - Prepare letters of instruction to costs draftsman to settle bill of costs prepared by opponent
  • Liaise with management over payment of damages as ordered by the court
  • Liaise with management over settlement of costs and discuss offers to settle
  • Ensuring landlords and members of staff are provided with a legal service that meets with Mears “Red thread” theme and culture of business.
  • Regularly reviewing all files for which solicitor is responsible
  • Assist in preparing legal cases generally on urgent overdue legal matters , particularly nightly let schemes and gas safety injunctions
