Job Description

Chemical Engineering Manufacturing Plant ManagerEnfield, EN3This 3rd generation privately owned business in Enfield, EN3 is now looking for a Chemical Plant Manager as the incumbent is leaving after 6 years post grad. I know the MD especially well; its a solidly run, profitable business that combines old schoolmanufacturing with tech. This role is reporting into the Production Director with active support from the MD who is very keen on staff development.PERFECT FOR CHEMIST with MANUFACTURING/ENGINEERING BACKGROUNDThis particular plant puts colour onto stainless steel.It is a dynamic product that uses chromium trioxide as a catalyst and consequently because that chemical is hazardous the site is permitted by the Environment Agency, HSE, Thames Water.Make no mistake, its a grubby business - no sterile rooms here. The prime concerns are safety, quality and consistency. Materials are exported globally.

  • The Colouring Plant Manager is charged with management and overseeing the day to day running of all areas within the Colouring Plant facility including production, quality, EHS, maintenance and Research & Development.
  • The Managing Director will require updates of reporting to the Environment Agency, HSE and other authorities that Colour Plant operations respond to for its permitting.
Work load:Act as the primary point of contact to the EA, HSE and Thames Water etc.Ensuring that all the legislative and regulatory requirements of the Colouring Plant are adhered to.Ensure the Colouring Plant operates within ISO9001 and ISO14001.Maintaining the companies ISO14001 environmental management system.Provide EHS leadership to improve processes, equipment, safety, staff awareness and training.Alongside the Production Director, ensure preventative maintenance is conducted and manage replacement of equipment.Overseeing the plant chemist and laboratory, ensuring that monitoring and measuring results are accurate and reported.Chairing quarterly environmental management meetings to keep Directors and senior management updated of Colour Plant issues.Manage the purchasing, receipt and storage of process chemicals, ensuring that incompatible chemicals are not stored together.Alongside the QEST manager, ensure that contractors are fully inducted and risk assessed prior to commencing works on site.Working with the Colouring Plant Foreman, ensure that the production operators have the necessary manpower and knowledge to ensure production targets are met. Updating the plants training matrix and conducting gap analysis where necessary.Working with the QEST manager, monitor and review training requirements (both mandatory and developmental).Alongside the Production Director, assess and plan Capex and generally to manage budgets.In tandem with production team to ensure that internal and external quality issues relating to the Colour Plant are resolved and that root causes are identified and closed out.responsible for addressing and resolving staff disciplinary issues in the Colour Plant and ensuring that records are kept up to date.To represent the business at relevant trade organisationsEssential Requirements-Experience in working in a highly regulated workplace, working closely with regulatory bodies such as the EA, HSE etc.-Experience with environmental permits.-A degree in Chemistry/ Engineering or an equivalent science-based subject.-A good understanding of general EHS principles.-Experienced in managing staff. There are 25-30 staff.-Has worked in a manufacturing environment.Desirable requirements of the candidate:-Experience of MCERTs self-monitoring of flow and stack emission monitoring.-Experience of REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals).Pay is between £50,000 and £70,000 based upon relevant experience. Holidays :- 25 days PLUS 2 to be taken over Xmas PLUS Bank Holidays of courseDeath in Service :- x 2 Annual Salary.Pension :- 5% co contrib.PHI:- Yes, depends on existing medical conditions.Hours : 8am to 5pm.
