Job Description

We are currently recruiting an Infrastructure Engineer to join our Data Centre and Operations team, which along with Client Services, and Network and Security Services teams, form the Infrastructure Services Group. The Data Centre and Operations team manage,maintain and support the virtual and physical server infrastructure and storage systems. This infrastructure is critical to the business operation of teaching and learning, research, and the administrative and support services across the University.The role holder will work closely with specialist infrastructure and network colleagues to fulfil service requests and resolve incidents for staff and students across the University. You will contribute to the day-to-day operation, configuration and monitoringof the Universitys data centre technologies, as well as contributing on new projects. You will directly contribute to technology used for teaching and research such as the School of Computing Virtual Security Operation Centre and other such initiatives.Our services employ a wide range of market leading technologies which makes for an interesting and challenging environment. You will work closely with members of the Data Centre and Operations team and collaboratively with other subject matter experts acrossthe department, and the wider University.The Role:

  • Install, maintain and support the server and storage infrastructure for the University and ensure that these run efficiently and are effectively managed.
  • Build and manage systems according to agreed standards e.g. security baselines.
  • Troubleshoot operational problems related to the server and storage infrastructure and action an appropriate response, whether this is fixing the issue or escalating if unable to resolve.
  • Own assigned service desk incidents and requests. Deliver the required support or change in line with agreed service standards, ensuring that the customer is kept informed throughout.
  • Support colleagues investigating operational problems in wider Information Services, using appropriate diagnostic tools and the understanding of the infrastructure being monitored.
  • Maintain up-to-date records for asset management systems, purchasing equipment and updating inventory.
  • Inspect our various data centres to identify any potential issues particularly with hardware, as well as remote proactive environmental monitoring. Escalate issues as required which could include arranging third party support contractors to come on-site.
  • Create data centre infrastructure related information/documentation, and provide advice, to customers (both internal and external) to support their use of the server and storage infrastructure.
  • Manage your personal development, in conjunction with your line manager, to meet your aspirations and the teams capability targets.
  • Role model the Universitys values & behaviours.
  • Work within the IS project management methodology, support projects and their resources to build, develop and improve services.
  • Be fully conversant with the change management and incident handling procedures and ensure they are effectively implemented and escalated when appropriate.
  • Participating in the "Out of Hours Support" Scheme if required.
  • Undertake any other duties as may be requested by your Line Manager and/or Head of Infrastructure.
  • Be responsible for ensuring that the information and records processed (received, created, used, stored, destroyed) on behalf of the University are managed in compliance with ALL applicable legislation, codes and policies e.g. Data Protection, InformationSecurity and Records Management.
What are we looking for:
  • A degree in an IT related discipline or relevant practical experience of supporting and delivering data networks.
  • Practical experience or an understanding of at least three of the following:
  • VMware vSphere or other virtual data centre environments: including building & deploying VMs, troubleshooting VM (Virtual Machine) server issues
  • Backup infrastructure environments
  • Installation, configuration and troubleshooting a Linux server environment
  • Experience or an understanding of network protocols, where used to access server and storage resources
  • Experience of writing simple scripts or code in one or more programming languages, for example: MS-DOS, MS- Powershell, Visual Basic Script, C#, AutoIT, HTML
  • Systems administration of Microsoft Windows Server and active directory
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to share information clearly and concisely in both styles.
  • Good organisational skills, with an ability to handle multiple pieces of work at the same time and to deliver results within agreed timescales.
  • An independent and proactive learner, but with a willingness to seek advice or support when necessary.
  • Ability to research and troubleshoot technical issues, taking ownership and managing to a resolution whilst understanding when appropriate escalation should take place
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex technical guides and reference materials.
