Job Description

Team OverviewThe role sits within Ofcoms Spectrum Assurance team under the Spectrum Group Directorate. Included in Ofoms statutory obligations is managing the UK civil radio spectrum under the 2006 Wireless Telegraphy Act. The role contributes towards Ofcom missionof making communications work for everyone in the UK by maintaining an interference free radio spectrum.Purpose of the RoleThe role is a 2 - year apprenticeship and the key purpose is to gain knowledge and experience in managing the civil radio spectrum in Scotland including tracing sources of harmful radio interference and follow up appropriate level of sanction. During theapprenticeship, progress will be guided and mentored by a Senior Spectring Engineering Officer. Following successful progression to Spectrum Engineering after two years, the role will be solely managing radio spectum in a geographical area in Scotland. Thejob holder will be reporting to the Nations Operations Manager and based at the Ofcom Edinburgh Office.Key responsibilitiesThe job holders key responsibilities will be as follows:

  • The jobholder will be expected to demonstrate willingness to gain knowledge of UK civil radio
  • spectrum, radio spectrum interference mechanisms and applicable Wireless telegraphy Act
  • legislation
  • The job holder will be expected to reach quarterly milestones as set out in a 2 year apprentice
  • development program
  • Be willing to travel to training events in the UK which occasionally involve overnight stays
  • Participate in a 2- year Ofcom sponsored distance learning engineering HNC achieving at least
  • a pass grade or better
  • Open to mentoring and guidance from a Senior Spectrum Engineer and participate in regular
  • 1:1s with the Operations manager
Skills, Knowledge and experienceThe apprentice role will involve the following key disciplines
  • The proficiency to solve engineering problems using date gathering and analytic skills.
  • Knowledge and application of UK WT Act legislation when breaches of the Act are identified.
  • Good interpersonal l skills when representing Ofcom to a wide range of external stakeholders
  • with the skill to explain complex engineering issues to a non- technical audience.
  • In situations where breaches of WT Act legislation are involved and a level of enforcement action
  • necessary, the ability to communicate in a firm but fair manner to a wide range of radio spectrum
  • users.
QualificationsHold al least two A level passes in Maths and Physics or equivalent qualifications
