An opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and motivated doctor to join our Pathology department, which we believe offers a supportive and encouraging environment in which to develop as a professional. This is a substantive post (10PAs) to join a team of 12 other Histopathologists who currently cover 10.4WTE posts; this post has arisen due a retirement in our department, which is otherwise fully staffed.Applicants must possess FRCPath or equivalent and have a broad experience in Histopathology (including being within 6 months of their CCT if in a UK-based Histopathology training scheme at the time of the advisory appointments committee).Surgical reporting in this post will be as a generalist, sharing cover of one or more MultiDisciplinary Team meetings with colleagues (specialties to be covered are open for discussion with the successful candidate).Major resection specimens in breast, colorectal, and urology are received, as well as endometrial, skin and some head & neck cancers, together with diagnostic work for upper gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, colposcopy and lung. Haematological malignancies are largely subclassified by the regional HMDS service in Leeds.Cytology reporting of non-gynaecological samples is required, but no cervical screening cytology is reported within the Trust. The successful candidate will be invited to participate in the Coroner’s Autopsy rota if suitably qualified (currently undertaken by 6 of the consultants).Highlights of this department include a daily multiheader microscope meeting where challenging, consensus and interesting cases are discussed and shared, monthly departmental governance and educational meetings, and a locally designed computer workflow programme which allows efficient, flexible and transparent working for the rota and workload allocation (as per RCPath points system). The Trust is collaborating with other local Trusts in the development of digital pathology within our department. The department reports approximately 35,000 histology requests and 2,600 non-gynae cytology specimens, and undertakes approximately 550 post-mortems (mostly coroner’s) per year. The department also undertakes clinical supervision of two SpRs from the Yorkshire Histopathology Training Programme.Every one of our 8000 staff at the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust plays a vital role in providing quality care to thousands of people living across Wakefield and North Kirklees each year. We’re proud that our workforce - our greatest asset - strives for excellence every day in providing care and support to those who use our services.
