Job Description

Technical Specialist Manager – Biochemistry, Immunology & Point of Care (Band 8a)Division of Cancer, Diagnostics and Clinical SupportDerbyshire PathologyFull time Band AFC 8a – 37.5 hours per weekAt University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB)NHS Foundation Trust patients are at the centre of all we do.Formed 2 years ago, Derbyshire Pathology serves Royal Derby Hospital, Chesterfield Royal Hospital and a number of Community Hospitals and is hosted by UHDB NHS Foundation Trust.The single clinically led management team for Derbyshire Pathology aims to provide:

  • A sustainable and efficient high quality pathology service for Derbyshire and beyond
  • Standardisation of end to end processes

  • Key Experience areas:
  • We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated Technical Specialist Manager who will be responsible for all aspects of the analytical services across The Royal Derby and Chesterfield Royal hospitals. The successful applicant will require HCPC registration, Fellowship of the IBMS and a management/ leadership qualification or equivalent experience. You will be able to demonstrate strong managerial and leadership experience with advanced knowledge of technical and scientific techniques in the relevant disciplines.
  • The Biochemistry, Immunology & Point of Care departments at the Royal Derby Hospital site are rapidly expanding and developing areas of Pathology. We have a wide range of state of the art equipment including 3 Roche Cobas 8000 tracked analysers with MPA8100 and RSA (p612) pre and post Analytics, 1 Roche Cobas 6000, Roche Cobas Integra 400Plus, manual spectrophotometry, Sebia electrophoresis, HPLC, LC MS/MS, 2 ThermoPhadia Immunocap 250 analysers, DS2 automated ELISA as well as manual testing including indirect IF. Our POCT department offers Gem 5000 blood gas analysers as well as glucose/ketone meters, Urine meters, anticoagulation testing as well as influenza.
  • Experience of managing/supervising within a biochemistry/immunology department
  • Experience of leadership and managing people
  • Advanced knowledge of Biochemistry, Immunology & POCT services
  • Experience of Quality Management Systems
  • Experience of controlling and managing risk
  • Experience of Pathology IT systems
  • Experience of policy development and change management
  • Key Requirements of the role:
  • HCPC registered
  • MSc in Biomedical Science
  • Chartered Scientist / Fellow of the IBMS
  • Substantial Senior/Supervisory experience within a Biochemistry and/or Immunology laboratory
  • This is a full-time permanent post (37.5 hours per week), based at the Royal Derby Hospital (some cross site working will be required). The role will require the post-holder to be flexible and highly organised, able to align their values with those of the organisation, have the ability to delegate effectively and work as part of the wider team with a positive attitude.An informal visit to the department is highly recommended.In return we will offer:
