CONSULTANT CELLULAR PATHOLOGISTWe are looking for a dynamic and motivated Consultant Histopathologist to join our team of high performing and productive Consultants to provide a Cellular Pathology Service. The Cellular Pathology Department is based on the site of Royal Derby Hospital. This is a very busy UKAS accredited department with an interesting, varied and growing workload, covering most specialties except medical renal biopsies, neuropathology and paediatric/neonatal pathology, and includes a team of 9 consultants, two specialty doctors and one associate specialist. We have pioneered extended biomedical scientist dissection and BMS reporting. There is an appetite for continuing laboratory transformation and advances in modern laboratory technology are embraced, including digital pathology. There is approximately 38,000 surgical and 5,000 non gynecological cytology specimen per year. Following centralisation of gynae cytology screening, the department became one of 8 hubs for HPV testing.Subspecialist reporting is well developed with individuals reporting in at least 3 different areas and no two individuals having exactly the same combination of specialties. Reporting of either Respiratory or Head and Neck would be desirable however there is also a requirement in other areas including Breast, Colorectal, Hepatobiliary and Gynae Pathology so individuals with any areas of interest are encouraged to discuss their interests with the department and apply.Individual consultants are protected from excessive diagnostic workload by a workload management system that is based on the RCPath workload scoring system. Diagnostic work distribution is by a combination of (majority) ‘pull’ and (very small minority) ‘push’ so that individual pathologists have significant flexibility. This means consultants can to a large extent control their own working patterns and find protected time to pursue other interests including clinical audit, teaching, research and development. As a consequence of retirement and expansion of services (including molecular pathology) there are a range of opportunities available. We are happy to work closely with interested candidates to ensure service needs and individual’s preferences are accommodated. The department is committed to both undergraduate and postgraduate education. A commitment to the autopsy service is also desirable. Each consultant Histopathologist in the department has sole use of a well-appointed office equipped with microscope and up to date IT facilities including the use of speech recognition software and proforma reporting (AES).Derbyshire is a wonderful place to live, situated within the Peak District National Park with stunning countryside, amazing history and, of course, fabulous people. It is an area of great natural beauty with rugged, peat-covered moorlands and magnificent limestone dales, with picturesque towns and villages, historic churches and some grand houses. It is the location of Britain’s first National Park - the Peak District National Park, which is the world’s second most visited National Park.Whether you enjoy your shopping or leisurely sightseeing trips, Derbyshire’s lively towns offer a delightful array of attractions. Derby itself is a lively and cosmopolitan University City in the heart of Derbyshire offering the best of both worlds – multicultural city life on the doorstep of a stunning rural environment.Informal enquires and visits are positively encouraged. For further details / informal visits contact:NameDr Nirav GandhiJob titleHead of Service for Cellular PathologyEmail addressnirav.gandhi@nhs.netTelephone numberAdditional contact informationDr Gerry van SchalkwykClinical Director for PathologyTel :Email :
