Job Description

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation TrustNational and Specialist CAMHSSnowsfields Adolescent Unit, Maudsley Hospital, Denmark Hill, London, SE5 9ASConsultant Psychiatrist - 10 PAsSouth London and the Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust has the largest Child & Adolescent Mental Health services in the country. The in-patient service, part of National and Specialist CAMHS, are seeking to recruit a Consultant Psychiatrist for this exciting post based at Snowsfields Adolescent Unit where they will provide clinical and medical leadership for both the MDT and junior medical staff.Snowsfields is an open adolescent inpatient unit, offering mental health care for adolescents (12-17 years) with serious mental illness who present in crisis and require hospital admission. The unit has 11 inpatient beds and up to 3 day patient places. The unit is part of the South London Partnership and as such works in partnership with South West London and St. Georges and Oxleas Trusts to be part of a networked Tier 4 in-patient provision, with an overarching SLP vision of creating alternatives to admission.The young people at Snowsfields present with a range of serious mental illness, including psychosis. A significant proportion are also admitted with problems relating to their mood and posing a risk to themselves or with neurodevelopmental disorders. Due to being situated so close to the National Specialist Outpatient CAMHS teams at the Michael Rutter Centre, the unit also admits young people with eating disorders or severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder as part of nationally contracted arrangements, so there is the opportunity to co-work cases alongside the specialist outpatient teams.Snowsfields Adolescent Unit has a strong multidisciplinary team comprising Nursing, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist, Art Psychotherapist, Psychology and Teachers. The medical staff consists of a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, one Specialist Trainee 4-6 and one Core Trainee 1-3. There is secretarial and administrative support.Although currently based at Mapother House, this is a really exciting time for the service, as Snowsfields Adolescent Unit is due to move to a purpose built home in the new Pears Maudsley Centre, a new development providing inpatient and specialist outpatients mental health services for children and young people, based on the Maudsley site. This is due to happen in 2021 and the post holder will be instrumental in the further development of Snowsfields Adolescent Unit in its new home. The Pears Maudsley Centre is going to be a purpose built £64million new clinical research centre, bringing together partner organisations of The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, with South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. This exciting and unique venture will create a beacon internationally for driving forward clinical and research practice for child and adolescent mental health.
