Job Description

DevOps EngineerSalary: £31,931 to £34,709 per annum (dependent on skills and experience)Location: Science and Technology Facilities Council, Daresbury Laboratory, Warrington OR Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Harwell, Oxfordshire (Hybrid Working)Hours: Full timeContract type: Open-EndedThe Digital Infrastructure Group delivers first-class IT support and services that underpin the STFC scientific programme of activities and partner organisations. We provide HPC Data Centre facilities, a comprehensive network and communications environmentto support the science undertaken by STFC alongside other areas such as Service Desk, Applications, Infrastructure and Cyber Security. We support STFCs projects in big data analytics, machine learning, AI and large computational modelling.About the roleThis DevOps engineer role is to support the day-to-day management of the monitoring software suite and provide expertise to support the Data Centre infrastructure - HVAC (Heating, ventilation and Cooling) and Electrical by monitoring, collecting data andcreating dashboards.Working closely with the Data Centre Operations management team; Heads of Hartree and Scientific Computing Departments on the strategic development of HPC Data Centres in accordance with STFC goals and priorities.Summary of the role:

  • To work with the HPC Data Centre Operations team to develop the software strategy for the Data Centres and Facilities
  • To perform proactive monitoring to ensure the health, performance and security of our production and non-production environments on-premise data centre
  • To be responsible for supporting infrastructure related to problem management, incident management, and software security management
  • To provide operational and administrative support of Windows/Linux operating systems to manage servers and associated applications, notably Nagios, Trend 963 and DCIM. To be able to write scripts for collating data from SNMP MIBS; Databases and SIPS devices
  • To assist with the Operations documentation, Disaster Recovery procedures across all computer room facilities
  • Linux Opensource software proficient. A few examples of technologies we work with on a daily basis: Nagios; Gitlab; Modbus/Sip/Babelbuster, Cacti, Elasticsearch, Weathermap; Grafana, opensource applications, Linux, Python, Docker, Raspberry Pi
Technical Requirements
  • Experience in the system administration of Linux systems to manage servers and associated applications, notably Nagios, Trend 963 and DCIM
  • Experience in HVAC and Electrical Distribution systems knowledge
  • Programming skill is scripting language such as Python, PowerShell, and Perl for collating data from SNMP MIBS; Databases and SIPS devices.
Person Specification
  • System administration knowledge of Linux operating systems (Centos/RHEL) environment
  • Good working knowledge of Shell Scripting or other Scripting languages such as PHP; Bash; Perl and PowerShell, to write scripts for collating data from SNMP MIBS files; Databases; SIPS devices and Modbus
  • Good knowledge in exploiting automation to reduce maintenance overheads as part of continuous delivery
  • Good working knowledge in Nagios; Gitlab; Modbus/Sip/Babelbuster, Cacti, Elasticsearch, Weathermap; Grafana, Docker, Raspberry Pi and associated applications
  • Must be enthusiasm for investigating new technologies
  • Experience in high availability and distributed systems
  • Degree in a relevant subject or equivalent work experience.
