Job Description

Network Engineer - Permanent, Full-TimeWe are currently recruiting a Network Engineer to join our Network and Security Services team, which along with Client Services, and Datacentre and Operations teams, form the Infrastructure Services Group. The Network and Security Services team provide theUniversitys key networks and networking services. Our team develop and maintain, among other things, the campus backbone, data centre networking, and wireless infrastructure.The role holder is responsible for the day to day operation, configuration, maintenance and monitoring of all active network equipment in order to ensure smooth running of our network services. They will actively assist first-line colleagues in the resolutionof incidents and problems and adhere to operational processes (such as incident, problem, change management processes) pertaining to network services.Our services employ a wide range of market leading technologies which makes for an interesting and challenging environment. You will work closely with members of the Network team and collaboratively with other subject matter experts across the department,and the wider University.The Role:

  • Maintain and support the systems and services that provide the data network for the University (at all its physical locations), and to ensure that these networks run efficiently and are effectively managed.
  • Build and manage new, and existing, network services to provide new/additional functionality, security and performance according to agreed standards e.g. security baselines.
  • Troubleshoot operational problems on data networks and support colleagues investigating operational problems in wider Information Services, using appropriate diagnostic tools and the understanding of the protocols and systems being monitored.
  • Own assigned service desk incidents and requests. Deliver the required support or change in line with agreed service standards, ensuring that the customer is kept informed throughout.
  • Create network related information/documentation and advice to customers (both internal and external) to support their use of the Universitys data network and services.
  • Manage your personal development, in conjunction with your line manager, to meet your aspirations and the teams capability targets.
  • Work within the IS project management methodology, support projects and their resources to build, develop and improve services.
  • Be fully conversant with the change management and incident handling procedures and ensure they are effectively implemented and escalated when appropriate.
  • Role model the Universitys values & behaviours.
  • Participating in the "Out of Hours Support" Scheme if required.
  • Undertake any other duties as may be requested by your Line Manager and/or Head of Infrastructure.
  • Be responsible for ensuring that the information and records processed (received, created, used, stored, destroyed) on behalf of the University are managed in compliance with ALL applicable legislation, codes and policies e.g. Data Protection, InformationSecurity and Records Management.
What are we looking for:
  • A degree in an IT related discipline or relevant practical experience of supporting and delivering data networks.
  • Practical experience of configuring, testing and maintaining a data network.
  • Practical experience of configuring and troubleshooting enterprise wireless networks.
  • Practical experience with monitoring, network diagnostic and network analytics tools.
  • Basic proficiency in network fundamentals:
  • TCP/IP
  • DNS/DHCP
  • IPv4/IPv6 & subnetting
  • 802.11 enterprise networks
  • Firewalls
  • VPN Technology
  • Experience of working in a Network team or similar technical role.
  • Evidence a logical and methodical approach to achieving tasks and objectives.
  • Ability to research and troubleshoot technical issues, taking ownership and managing to a resolution whilst understanding when appropriate escalation should take place.
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex technical guides and reference materials.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to share information clearly and concisely in both styles.
  • Good organisational skills, with an ability to handle multiple pieces of work at the same time and to deliver results within agreed timescales.
  • An independent and proactive learner, but with a willingness to seek advice or support when necessary.
