Job Description

About the team: The Underwriting department supports the Bank by assessing the risk of lending and protecting the Bank against this risk and losses. With strong market knowledge, diagnostic approach and ability to give dependable decisions, the team take a common senseapproach to manual underwriting.This opportunity is to join the Underwriting and Completions team that underwrite Buy-to-Let and Residential cases.THIS ROLE CAN BE BASED IN CHATHAM OR FAREHAMWhat you will be doing: In this role, you will have the opportunity to facilitate and progress manually underwritten mortgage applications, within the assigned mandate level, through to mortgage offer and in line with the Banks operating procedures and policies. This opportunitywill give you the opportunity to work within a close and enthusiastic team, whilst developing your career and personal goals.Your responsibilities will include

  • Develop your manual underwriting skills via training and coaching, to achieve your first mandate.
  • Review Agreement in Principle requests in a timely manner ensuring that the information meets the requirements of the Banks Lending Policy and confirms decisions to the relevant intermediary.
  • Underwrite allocated applications to offer, within assigned mandate level and agreed service standards, requesting further information from relevant stakeholders where required and verifying this on receipt.
  • Offer mortgages to approved borrowers, within assigned mandate level and agreed service standards, requesting any outstanding information if required and verifying it on receipt.
  • Communicate with intermediaries by telephone and in writing, delivering customer excellence and looking to lend appetite, handling objections and providing objective feedback to any questions.
  • Work closely with our sales team to take consideration of time pressures and customer journey.
  • Manage escalations and resolve complex and technical queries from other team members.

  • Previous experience as a mandated mortgage underwriter within a UK financial operation is essential
  • Previous experience underwriting residential mortgages (to include a mix of at least two of the following:- portfolio lending, specialist buy to let, credit repair/subprime, bridging and bespoke priced residential loans) is essential
  • Working knowledge of the FCA/PRA regulations regarding residential mortgages is essential.
  • Previous experience of creating loan recommendation documents and delivering them to an Executive Committee or Leadership Team would be an advantage.
