Job Description

Translational Research Scientist - Renal Cell BiologyLocation - CambridgeDuration - 12 month FTCOur client is an early-stage drug development company specializing in the treatment of neurodegenerative disease, rare mitochondrial diseases and fibrosis. The key research focus is on the discovery and development of first-in-class, small molecule drugs of significant commercial interest.This opportunity is for an initial 12 month contract and will be working within the companies Translational Sciences team supporting the pre-clinical program through study of quantitative and mechanistic effects of small molecule drug candidates on renal cell biology and mitochondria.Key responsibilities of the role will include

  • Design and delivery of pharmacology / pharmacodynamics studies, including ex vivo analysis and use of translatable cellular assay systems.
  • Develop and implement new translatable in vivo and in vitro cell model systems and biochemical assay methods for renal injury / fibrosis.
  • Input to- and management of- ongoing and new/planned studies at both academic and contract research organisations.
  • Critically analyse and interpret data, define realistic timelines for studies and meet delivery deadlines.
  • Execute high impact studies within an extremely fast-paced and collaborative environment.
  • Contribute cell biology, metabolism and bioenergetics expertise across pipeline projects.
  • Effective collaboration management.
  • Delivery of pharmacology/pharmacodynamics research reports and presentations.
  • Qualifications, Skills and Experience
  • Ph.D. in renal disease or mitochondrial biology and bioenergetics with additional experience within a relevant pharmaceutical industry role or postdoctoral experience.
  • Experience of studying translational markers/assessments in cell systems and in ex vivo tissues from preclinical models.
  • Established scientific reputation as evidenced by publication track record.
  • Practical experience investigating one or more of the following areas in vitro / ex vivo: mitochondrial dysfunction, protein mis-folding and aggregation, cellular proteostasis mechanisms, metabolomics.
  • Excellent cell biology and western blotting skills including antibody validation for westerns and ELISAs.
  • Practical experience with primary renal cell populations is desirable.
  • Experience working in cross-functional and matrixed Research and Translational teams is desirable.
  • Use of relevant in vitro and in vivo models and experience of working with CROs to deliver in vitro and in vivo studies.
  • Able to establish, maintain and manage effective collaborations with external partners.
  • Able to quickly prioritise deliverables according to team and business requirements.
