Job Description

UKHSA is looking for a Senior Data Surveillance Scientist for Health Protection (SDSS) to join its local Health Protection teams. This is an exciting and rewarding role in public health that involves data analysis and surveillance.The Senior Data Surveillance Scientist for Health Protection (SDSS) works as part of a dynamic analytical community and supports the regional health protection team (HPT) by providing the health protection intelligence function to delivery of an effectivehealth protection service. As part of that dynamic analytical community, the postholder will work collaboratively with, and may rotate working with the Knowledge and Intelligence (K&I) function of the Health Improvement Directorate, the regional Health Protectionfunction and the National Infection Services Field Services team to jointly enhance services and develop hubs of excellence in analytical services.The SDSS is responsible for the surveillance systems across specific topic areas, and leads and supports the data collection, validation, and production of routine surveillance intelligence in these areas. This includes developing and maintaining effectivehealth surveillance databases, developing and delivery of routine and bespoke reports and supporting the use of HPZone (a national UKHSA web-based incident management system). The SSSHP will analyse and interpret surveillance data and develop automated routinesand solutions as well as overseeing and responding to more complex or sensitive data requests. This will be through their application of, and expertise in, analytical, statistical, database, mapping and web tools. They will provide expert advice on informationgovernance and quality and evaluate surveillance systems.This role can be worked from our UKHSA Cambridge office (CB2 0SR) or our UKHSA Mildenhall office (IP28 7JX), candidates will need to live a commutable distance from either one of these offices. Hybrid working is available, subject to line managerapproval and business needs. Some infrequent business travel will be required. *Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas. Relocation expenses are not available.*Salary Bandings: Cambridge (Outer London): £40,721 - £46,231Mildenhall (National): £38,724 - £44,393Working Pattern - Full Time, Part Time, Job Share, Flexible Working, Hybrid WorkingResponsibilities section:As a Senior Data Surveillance Scientist your main responsibilities will include:

  • Support, develop, and oversee surveillance systems and data requests for health threats in region, including and beyond Covid-19, and conduct and assure complex statistical analyses and reports using various software tools.
  • Build and maintain stakeholder relationships, and lead and disseminate data science products with high impact and compelling stories using appropriate medium to visualise data.
  • Oversee and advise on information and data management for outbreak and exceedance investigations.
  • Apply and automate statistical tests and algorithms, and use various software tools for data extraction, analysis, and validation.
  • Advise on and evaluate quality and governance issues, surveillance systems, and incident and outbreak responses, and ensure data quality.
  • Manage, conduct and disseminate research on public health surveillance and infectious disease control, including project management, information governance, data analysis, literature review, grant proposal, ethical approval, and scientific publication andpresentation.
  • Manage, lead and develop staff performance and workload, and act as deputy for line manager when needed.
  • Teach and support staff and stakeholders on surveillance, epidemiology, information management and governance, and develop teaching material and courses.
  • Work with UKHSA and NHS colleagues to enhance health protection surveillance and intelligence, and present on lead area or specialty.
  • Lead and collaborate with stakeholders and partners to solve problems and deliver on specific topics or functions.
