We are dedicated to discovering, developing, and delivering innovative, meaningful medicines and healthcare solutions that enrich the lives of patients. Science and patients are at the heart of everything we do.This is an opportunity for a hardworking and passionate biophysical scientist to play a role in drug discovery projects at AstraZeneca in Cambridge UK. This lab-based role is based in our Structure Biophysics and FBLG (SBF) department. In this position you will be a part of Discovery Sciences in AstraZeneca’s BioPharmaceuticals organization. The SBF department has a leading capability in biophysics, crystallography, cryo-EM, fragment chemistry and PROTAC chemistry. The Biophysics team has expertise in molecular biophysics methods, including SPR, NMR, ITC, DSF, HDX-MS and single molecule approaches and we are seeking to improve our MS capabilities. We apply biophysics in small-molecule drug discovery from target validation to drug candidate. What you will do: Working collaboratively on projects with structural biologists, protein scientists, oncology bioscientists and chemists, you will develop innovative ways to build high-quality lead compounds and candidate drugs.

  • Provide quantitative biophysical data on protein-ligand binding (compounds and new drug modalities) including affinity, kinetic and stoichiometric data to inform chemistry design and mechanistic understanding
  • Develop and run fragment screens providing high quality data to inform design of reversible and covalent leads
  • Validate and characterise hits from various screens (HTS, DNA-encoded library, virtual, collaborations)
  • Provide high fidelity data and insights on the molecular mechanism of lead compounds and drug candidates
  • Identify and drive improvements and innovations in biophysics, in particular strengthening our capability in mass spectrometry
  • Achieve personal scientific visibility through project contributions and internal presentations; and external scientific visibility through conference presentations and authorship on peer-reviewed publications
  • Essential Requirements
  • Formal training and expertise in biophysics, relevant experience (PhD and postdoc or industry experience; publications).
  • Expertise and extensive experience in biophysical characterization of molecular interactions and mechanistic insights, using methods such as SPR, NMR, ITC, DSF, fluorescence-based, mass spectrometry and single-molecule methods.
  • A track record of scientific excellence and peer-reviewed publications or patents.
  • Desirable
  • Experience in protein mass-spectrometry and in particular HDX-MS, native-MS or covalent ligand screening using LC/MS methods will be highly valued.
  • Experience in drug discovery, preferably in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry
  • Interested in this role Please apply by 12th July 2020.AstraZeneca embraces diversity and equality of opportunity.
