Job Description

Central to our work is the detailed characterisation of our protein therapeutics, achieved principally through mass spectrometry and biophysical analysis.We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist to join our Analytical Sciences group here at AstraZeneca on a permanent basis! Role Responsibilities

  • Predominantly laboratory-based position supporting the characterization of a broad portfolio of biologics, including mAbs, ADCs, bispecifics, enzymes, mRNA and viruses
  • Design and execute studies to understand the structure/function relationships in protein therapeutics.
  • Monitor critical quality attributes in support of upstream, downstream and formulation development
  • Method development, qualification, tech transfer and continuous improvement of physicochemical and/or characterization methods.
  • Analysis, interpretation and presentation of data to cross functional teams. Preparation of SOPs and technical reports.
  • Explore new technology and/or approaches to understand product variants and novel scaffolds
  • Represent the analytical function at research and CMC interfaces to support candidate drug selection, process development or clinical supply at SME level
  • Essential Requirements:
  • BSc, MSc, or PhD of relevant experience in biochemistry, chemistry or biotechnology with a strong understanding of protein chemistry
  • Extensive experience using LC-MS to characterise sequence variants, post-translational modification analysis and chemical modifications of biologics.
  • Confident developing molecule specific mass spectrometry methods and evaluating new technologies.
  • Experience of Biopharmaceutical Development and CMC related activities including supporting/authoring regulatory filings
  • High quality reporting/presentation of analytical data to audiences at all levels
  • Excellent track record of publications and/or conference presentations
  • Collaborate positively with colleagues in a forward thinking and cross-disciplinary/cross-functional environment
  • Desirable Requirements:
  • Practical experience analysing proteins/nucleic acid/nano particles/virus capsids using a number of biophysical techniques, such as CD, DSC, AUC, light scattering, infrared spectroscopy, light obscuration, and flow microscopy.
  • Familiarity with structural MS (HDX-MS, Native-MS and XL-MS, FPOP)
  • Familiarity with physicochemical methods such as N-linked glycan analysis, chromatography (SEC,IEC, RP), electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE and c-IEF) to analyse therapeutic proteins
  • Familiarity of carbohydrate biochemistry, and experience of techniques for characterising and quantifying glycan structures
