Job Description

Electrical Design and PLC Engineer £45,000 plus bonus and benefits Cambridgeshire based high tech company are looking to expand their team with an Electrical Design and PLC Engineer.The Electrical Design and PLC Engineer will be working within the Product Development group to deliver equipment for adoption in various high tech cutting edge industrial applications.The primary objectives are as follows:

  • Deliver the electrical and electronic subsystem designs to enable the development of new products from concept through to final market release
  • Oversee the integration of these subsystems into final product for release to customer
  • Assist with the development and testing of PLC control
  • Fully validate designs through pre-determined and methodical test processes.
  • Define and use processes to allow concept validation of all design solutions.
  • Integrate all design and validation activities into other areas of the business (e.g. mechanical and electrical design).
  • Contribute to the design expertise of the team, with the following electrical skills:
    • Experience of Electrical Control Panel Design incorporating 3 phase power, high power switching electronics, analogue control to current standards
    • Experience in defining the regulatory and safety requirements of product design to Machinery / Low Voltage / EMC Directives
    • Performing FMEA / Risk Assessments / DFM (Design for manufacture)
    • Knowledge of commissioning / testing product
    • Experience of programming PLCs would be an advantage
    • Ensuring compliance documentation is completed for CE mark
  • Take the ideas of the project leaders and developing industrialised solutions
  • Support the transfer of products from development to manufacturing/customer, including documentation
  • Provide support / expert advice for current production equipment
  • Occasional travel to attend conferences, exhibitions or customer visits.
Required Skills & Experience for the Electrical Design and PLC Engineer:
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or similar
  • Good understanding of AC and DC electrical principles, capacitance, inductance etc
  • Working knowledge of 3-phase power, its control and associated components
  • Understanding and experience of PLC control
  • Extensive fault finding experience, with an ability to follow root cause analysis methodologies.
  • Knowledge of legal and regulatory obligation relating to CE, UKCA, and UL marking.
  • Experience in an Electrical / Control Engineering design role
  • Knowledge of safety circuits and system compliance
  • Working knowledge of standard manufacturing and engineering processes
  • Experience in designing and developing/testing new products
  • Producing detailed electrical designs preferably using Eplan P8
  • Good communication skills – able to work across team/and functions
  • Strong organisational and problem solving skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and willingness to learn
  • Familiarity with software/simulation tools for modelling power supplies (Mathcad, MATLAB etc…).
  • IT literate – Effective use of MS Office (Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, OneNote).
